I'd like to know what kind of information 7chan had to hand over to the authorities.

Are you logging IPs, etc? and for how long?

I ask because:

>7chan practices a transparent nonlogging policy. We keep absolutely no Apache access logs to guard your IP addresses in the occurrence of federal seizure of our server(s)

What was there to give the feds?

I'd like to know what the hell happened.

>We keep absolutely no Apache access logs
Access logs are the logs of IP's who accessed the server and what pages/threads they viewed.

If you post your IP is logged for that post. Without doing so enforcing bans and reducing bot-spam would be near-impossible.

Not a mod.

True, we couldn't have scum b& if there were zero accountability.

mods will not reveal the truth, conspiracy

This is basically correct. I never turned on HTTP logging because they wasted too much space so there'd be nothing on that end. However, when you post, your IP is associated with your post, which is of course how bans work.

As a little extra tidbit of information. Kusaba doesn't store the IP addresses of users in plain text in the database. Instead, they're encrypted and the only way to decrypt them is to use the a key which is stored at the software layer [1]. That way, if the database were ever dumped by a malicious party, they would not be able to get the IP addresses unless they had the key, which would require that they get shell access and access the code directly, which would usually require a completely different attack vector.

I'm guessing we don't care about the banned then since their IP's are publicly displayed.

The moderator log exists in a separate table and doesn't encrypt the IPs, no. It's kind a known, though low priority, limitation. The IPs in the banlist table are encrypted[1], though. Unless you regularly scrape the moderator log, it wouldn't be very much use as it only contains the last 15 entries.

Exactly the kind of thing that is not too much trouble for the FBI.

Having a script pull the ban list every 15 minutes would be a pretty effective way to nab a few extra pedos, if nothing else, which is more than enough motivation for our friendly federal overlords.

Leave it be a lesson to shit-posters; if you get banned the party-van will be round to pick you up shortly.

Can you imagine the FBI logic?

If 7chan throws them out....
