Captcha upgrade Sazpaimon ## Admin ## 16/11/19(Sat)21:17 No. 9047

So, clearly, the current captcha that we're using has not done a very good job of preventing spam. So starting today, I'm going to try using Google's new captcha system to see if that solves our spam problem. If you have any issues, report them here.

what happened the other day? do you know who did it?
most of /cake/ got deleted and it seems we got super-spammed.

also nice new captcha.
no issues so far.
carry on.

I honestly have no idea. It was completely out of nowhere and didn't make any sense.

It's a shame about what happened to /cake/. I also wasn't able to restore it because I don't make nightly backups. All my site backups are real-time (in case, for instance, a host pulls the plug on us without warning), so when a a file gets deleted on the site, it immediately gets deleted on the backup. There's no reason for me not to have a scheduled backup that can be used to restore a snapshot of a particular point in time, so I'll probably start doing that as well as the real-time ones. I do have all the deleted posts as posts themselves aren't immediately purged from the database upon deletion, but the images are gone, leaving them without much, if any, value. It seems that you guys are doing a good job picking up the pieces though.

you're the most reasonable and pleasant mod/admin i've ever interacted with, i think.

i've been uploading a lot to /cake/. hopefully others will too.

oh, also - the captchas are just on threadmaking posts, not on general posting. wouldn't this allow someone to use xchan directory dumper to flood each thread that's already established with images and stuff? i don't really know how this stuff works, so correct me if i'm wrong about that.

anyways, you've been doing a good job, keep it up. i'm glad we have you here on 7chan.

Sure, that's a possible scenario, but for the moment I like giving users the ability to dump images to threads easily. Plus, if a thread gets flooded with replies, it's much easier to clean up than multiple individual threads.

If it gets to the point where it becomes a big problem, then yes we will have to enable captcha for replies. If it gets that point, I'll probably implement some way for a user to bypass captcha (sort of like 4chan pass, but free).

It looks like archive.org has at least some of the images saved, would it be possible to have a crawler grab the images from there and automatically rebuild the old threads/posts?

My bad, forgot links:
Cake board: https://web.archive.org/web/20161103170544/http://7chan.org/cake/

A thread: https://web.archive.org/web/20161103172747/http://7chan.org/cake/res/46872.html

An image from that thread: https://web.archive.org/web/20130821075853/https://7chan.org/cake/src/133955538079.jpg

I haven't looked to see how much is saved, but there's definitely some content there.

Thanks, I looked into archive.org earlier, and I found it very hit or miss. Each thread I looked at either had only thumbnails with a small handful of full images or nothing at all, and I wasn't sure if there'd be any value in threads with just thumbnails, but if there is, I can certainly restore them.

Your example, >>>/cake/46872 was actually the most complete one I've seen so far, so I went ahead and restored it.
