Evangelion is ABSOLUTELY very simple once you know what it is that happened. Trouble is, the style is so (intentionally) disorganized and haphazard, told through the third-person-limited lenses of characters that also don't know what the hell is going on, that it's difficult to piece together.

It's like trying to discern what's going on in a Picasso painting. Oh sure, it's THERE, it's just very difficult to see because your first reaction is "What. The. FUCK?!"
