Something Like Jin-Roh Anonymous-San 2014年09月29日(月) 03時08分46秒 34670 ID: 2576d3

I'm looking for anime like Jin-Roh. I liked how it distanced itself from anime tropes as much as possible. The characters felt real, the pacing was perfect, and the film was orchestrated as though it were live action. It's like the people who made it took at look at other anime, and said "No, that's stupid. We don't have to do that." The result is one of my favorite anime films.

The only other anime I've seen do this is the Ghost in the Shell movie, but I don't know if there are any other shows or films which try to capture the same feeling. I guess there are a few Miyazaki films which do this too, but with this request I'm looking for something I can think about as I watch, rather than just sit back and let the film do my thinking for me.

Well it was a manga before it was an anime movie. The themes were to keep it close to the time of post-war japan and a lingering american/communist presence that causes unrest in the political climate. It had a touch of sci-fi in it too.

There are some serious things that have a little more sci-fi in them, mostly coming from around that time. Did you ever watch Angel Cop, Wings over Honnemaise, Venus Wars, or Grave of Fireflies.?

You won't get anything close to Jin-Roh unless you pick up the manga, and I'm not going to recommend LOGH to you because I'm too much of an elitist and don't like how it's the go to franchise when someone wants to talk about "deep and meaningful" anime.

I was thinking about reading the manga a while ago, but I fell out of reading manga when I turned 20. Maybe I'll pick it up sometime.

I've seen Wings of Honneamise, can't believe I forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me, I know what to watch tomorrow night.

I'll be sure to check out Angel Cop and Venus Wars, they seem interesting.

About Grave of the Fireflies...
For some reason, if too many people tell me to watch or read something, I'll eventually stop caring about it and never pick up whatever they were recommending. It happened with Twin Peaks, Shade the Changing Man, and those Chuck Paluckachuck books. Well, too many people told me too many times that I should watch Grave of the Fireflies, and I just stopped anticipating it after a while. I might watch it someday. Probably not though.

I like that you said that and can see now that you have said that a good reason for you not to watch Grave of Fireflies. When too many people, especially normies, know about something and they all have the confidence to recommend it to you it's probably shit to your or shit in general.

I just mentioned it because it's "realer" than most other stuff out there, like Jin-Roh. Just no scifi aspect to it.

Man it's not like I think it's bad or anything, I just stopped looking forward to watching it. The fact that you recommended it means it's going to be in the text document I'm putting together, simply because it checks out with what I'm looking for, but it's just not going to be as high a priority as everything else on the list.

Speaking of which, if there's anything else you forgot about I'll gladly look into that too.

Wings of Honneamise is good.
Grave of the Fireflies is the most depressing movie ever. The live action is bullshit and empathizes with a character it shouldn't.

Memories is 3 unrelated ovas stuck together. First one probably fits what you're looking for.
Perfect Blue is a good thriller.

I'll even throw in Kenshin OVA if you haven't seen it.

As far as 'anime tropes' go, well that depends what you've seen. I think a lot of the attraction of anime is that it's not what we are used to seeing but after you see there are only so many types. Actually I agree with above, manga is the way to go; less cost to produce allows artists to make their own unique stuff.

OP here.

I liked perfect blue. Shit was all right.

I'll add Memories to the list. I'm always down fora short film or two. Or in this case, three.

With Kenshin OVA, you talking about the Rurouni Kenshin things or is there another anime called Kenshin?

>>34748
I've seen Cat Soup. I liked it, watched it twice just to wrap my head around it.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit looks okay. The feel I'm getting from the trailer and the summaries makes it seem like it's focused equally on politics and action. I'll add it to the list, but I'm skeptical that it's what I'm looking for. Still looks enjoyable either way.

Millenium Actress looks a lot like the anime version of Mr. Nobody, if you've ever seen that. Except instead of mortality being the theme, it's more focused on cinema. I guess I'll give it a go.

Yomigaeru Sora – Rescue Wings (2006)
About a fighter pilot who is "demoted" to piloting a rescue helicopter. Feels like a tv drama for normals except for the flying scenes. Avoids most anime tropes.

I disliked that anime...

//spoilers:
basically they just fail at every rescue mission they fly. Gets old really damn fast! :-(
