Today I got a cat. Her name is Misha and she is 1 year old, fixed, vaccinated. The problem is that she's really shy and skittish. I can pet her and make her purr, but I can't approach her easily and she gets spooked when I walk around.

Wat do /ani/?

Pic unrelated to my cat.

Just give her time to chill and take it easy. She's just been put in an unfamiliar place with an unfamiliar person. Let her figure out who hands out the food and she'll be lovin' on you in no time.

But she's just hiding now.

she has been kidnapped by a giant predator who has locked her inside of a large cage filled with weird garbage everywhere. it smells like chemicals. will she be eaten? not if she can hide long enough to make a break for it.

lol just be patient, she will come around.

It can take cats anywhere from a couple days to several weeks to come around. My grandpa's cats used to disappear every time anyone came into the house from the time they were kittens until they died. Its just their comfort zone.

Make sure she sees you put the food forward.

She's pretty chill now, she'll sleep on the bed with me and stuff. Though she still gets spooked by things easily.

I've never had a shy cat before, so... yeah I don't know how to un-shy her.

Also she learnt her name in a day :D

After my cat Ferris had her surgery, she recovered in my room. The cat literally had half of my bedroom, with her cage, changing table and stretching/feeding area. She stayed there for about a month recovering. Now she's practically glued to my hip. She won't let anyone else in the family hold her and she isn't prone to sitting on or staying around anyone that isn't me. She straight up disappears when new people come around, and she doesn't come to anyone but me when called.

Like the other gentlemen said, it's perfectly normal she's afraid. You need to give her tranquility, and resist to the urge of punishing her if she's naughty.
Things will definitely come in time.

Also, Misha is a mighty fine name.

Cats require time to get used to new surroundings. Eventually she should become calmer and accepting.

Her name is now Мишка (Mishka).
It means bear in Russian.

Yeah... I know... I guess you didn't understand that the question was how to make her less shy and skittish.

I'm updating this.

The cat is not as shy anymore, but she still gets scared of loud noises or sudden movements... Other than that she's affectionate.

Pic is her.

ask your vet for a chemical, that makes your cat feel home.

when cats feel good the spray a certain hormone. When they smell it again, they know, that that place is comftable. And that stuff can be produced and the vet sales it.

The specific brand name of this chemical is FeliWay. It comes in a little jar that you plug into an outlet adapter, like one of those Glade plug-ins. It has varied results. It's mostly used for litterbox issues.

Your cat will chill out naturally on her own, especially when she realizes that you control the cat food, but if you want to spend $50 on some feline pheromones then power to ya, bro.

It took my cat that I found one winter about 4 years before it finally realized it can stop being a prissy bitch and be nice since I've been taking care of it for so long.

leave her alone until she gains trust in you, the fact that shes skiddish means that shes had bad human contact in her passed.

This seems like a pretty normal cat to me.

best advice: don't pet her "overhand" until she gets used to her living area. Right now her senses are over stimulated. Her instinct is trying to sort out what is trying to play, and what is trying to kill her (default). When she sits down on you, then pet her overhand, otherwise just let her rub on your leg. Try making a fist and looking "through" it as she approaches. She will associate your fist with a cat's head size, and if she sees your eyes at the same angle it's even better.

Sounds weird, but makes friends. Pic is my cat on his back asleep. He knows the sound of my car and waits to see me. Even if his dish is full, he walks with me to check the mail, and he'll jump in my lap when I'm trying to get out of my car.
