I think it had to do with the music industry to be honest. They were actually still capable of forseeing trends, then worked with movies to promote those future bands. Thats how the movie Singles ended up with the future members of Pearl Jam as the members of Citizen Dick.

Now all those guys have retired and their replacements are sitting on their asses scouring YouTube for the next Justin Beiber, instead of doing the hard work of touring the country visiting local clubs and watching performance after performance after performance to find what's coming next.

In some ways I think western culture was more accepting of diversity in the 90s than it is today. It was a time when people from any national, racial, religious, or sexual background could make great rock--and even when it was political it wasn't the lazy, self-serving "social justice" whining that goes on now.

Youtube  I used to have this incredible collection of acoustic renditions. Most of it came from Unplugged albums, but there were also a number of recordings from radio programs. Sadly I think those are lost to time; the only place to download them was first-generation Napster.

I used to joke with friends that if a musician had ever farted on a microphone you could find it on Napster.
