Every gentleman carries a pocket knife. Post yours

It may be a little blue-collar, but I carry a swiss army knife.

I recently purchased a straight-edge razorblade. Not entirely on-topic, as I don't carry it with me, but I must say it is a very satisfying shave. Perhaps one day I will get a pair of boots like that charming young lady in Kill Bill has and start taking it along.

I'm sure the intent of your message was good, but that kind of vulgarity is unnecessary.

I have experimented with carrying a Swiss army knife and a flash drive knife, a Swiss army knife with a flash drive, a Leatherman and a flash drive, and a Leatherman with a flash drive. All have proven to be disappointing combinations.

I now carry a simple, small, single blade knife of generic origins. It serves it's purpose when I need a knife. Otherwise I have found I am better off just using the proper size tool that I need. After all, we are not on a safari most days gentlemen.

a smashing purchase, my fine fellow. though is it carbon or stainless steel?

To be perfectly honest with you, it isn't a straight edge in the truest sense of the word -- it is a straight-edge-shaped razor-holder, if youget my meaning. I got it because it was very cheap, to see if I liked it. Now that I'm convinced, and keen to buy a real one, what would you advise? Perhaps a carbon one would be nicely contradictory...

Sophisticated Gentleman 12/02/28(Tue)23:58 No. 279

a carbon steel one (they're more expensive though) will be sharper and stay sharper longer, at the expense of requiring more maintenance.

I have no experience with knives so I'm sorry if these questions are a little bit silly.

How do you guys go into stores and such with a knife? While I would like to carry one for utility, I'll be honest and say that I live in a rough neighborhood so it could also possibly be used as a weapon in self-defense. But I don't want straight from the bus stop to my home. I sometimes stop at the grocery, which has a metal detector in front of each entrance/exit. Do they set off the alarms?

>>
Sophisticated Gentleman 12/02/29(Wed)14:10 No. 285

>>280
>Do they set off the alarms?
yes. check your state laws. it's legal to carry pocket knives if they're under a certain length. they aren't ideal for self-defense though. they are tools. try getting a pistol for concealed carry if you are that serious about self-defense.

Sophisticated Gentleman 12/02/29(Wed)14:39 No. 286

I've owned a champion victorinox swiss army knife. I love the one in the middle pic.

Pocket knives are for vagabonds, people of the lower classes. Those that do not follow the Queensbury rules of fisticuffs. In short, riff-raff.

pocket knives are useful in many situations, if you have good self control and self confidence than you needn't use one in combat even if you have it. also i encourage you to read the entire thread before attempting to contribute to the discussion as this has already been covered.

This is true when the knife in question meet these two criteria:
1) Cheap plastic handle, serrated blade, quick flip open design.
2) Considered by it's owner as a weapon, or a devise to be used for protection.

A pocket knife can also be a gentlemanly thing (think of your Dad's Swiss Army knife, rather than something designed to fend off angry niggers, pic related), or a utility knife, such as a Leatherman, or even a box cutter.

WillyTheDisk!!HlBTR2AQVm 12/03/01(Thu)23:40 No. 304

Further more, carrying a knife like in my previous post for protection is a sign of someone who's rather insecure, and uses the knife to assert his masculinity. In actuality, whipping that thing out in a confrontation is fucking stupid, as you're more likely to get yourself seriously hurt with it.

>>
Sophisticated Gentleman 12/03/02(Fri)00:25 No. 305

I carry a Spyderco Tenacious. I wouldn't use it for self defense as a first option, or even a second option. A hand gun, a taser, or a baton would be more practical for defense, a knife just is not a practical weapon for self defense unless you are trained to use it for self defense. A hand gun, taser, or baton are fairly fool-proof, a knife requires some skill to use for self defense. In a self defense situation, you are trying to put an end to a threat, not merely mame or disfigure.

In any case, it is illegal in many states (I don't know if it's most or just a handful) to carry a knife for the intent of using it in self defense. There are also laws in many states against carrying "dangerous" knives. Utility knives such as swiss army, leatherman, boxcutters, buck knives, etc. are harmless, and most manufacturers make these kinds of knives under 4 and 3/4 inches (the legal limit of length for a folding knife in most states).

Any folding knife over that length in most states is highly illegal and impractical. Carrying any fixed blade knife of any length on your person (such as in a sheath or tucked in your belt) is also highly illegal in most states unless you are using it for outdoors purposes (hunting, fishing, camping, etc.)

The fact is, up until the 60's and 70's, there were a lot more ladies and gentlemen who carried a folding knife on their person, in a purse or coat pocket. It's because of exploitation films and James Dean movies that knives became associated with delinquency and thuggery.

Sophisticated Gentleman 12/03/02(Fri)00:32 No. 306

In the 1920's up until the 1950's, a gentleman was expected to have at least 3 of the following on their person when out of their home:
Hat
Comb
Matches or Lighter (whether they smoked or not)
Coin purse
Pen
Handkerchief
Folding Knife
Note pad

If all you had in your pockets was money and keys then you would probably be considered forgetful.

i am trained to use a knife in combat as well as several other weapons and i still prefer hand to hand combat for several reasons, the main one being that i have the greatest advantage without a weapon. also most people with weapons underestimate those without. its easy enough to break the elbow of someone who comes at you with a knife and the worst you'll suffer is a severe gash in your arm.

Blades of all kinds are of use to cunning gentlemen such as ourselves, and I enjoy carrying two or three different knives at any given time.
In the right pocket of my trousers I carry a sturdy Sheffield lock-back knife with a four-inch blade and reddish wooden handle. Because a long coat can prevent a gentleman from accessing his pockets in the dead of Canadian winter, I also carry another knife. It is clipped to my outer right pocket, a slightly smaller knife which is less aesthetically pleasing but which opens faster and has much sentimental value.
Less often, (read: almost never) I carry a Pakistani-made Bowie-style knife with a blue wooden handle, branded as "The Tiger Skinner". Social customs in North America seem to have rendered the open-carrying of large knives "rude", but nevertheless if the tool seems useful I scoff at the law and politely hide the knife in a deeper pocket.
There are some rather exquisite knives in this thread, gents! Excellent work, and cheerio!

I must respectfully say, you do not sound like a gentleman.

A knife is a tool. Assuming that it will be used as a weapon is like assuming a match will be used for arson.

I hope this board has hire standards.

i was merely noting the consequences of useing a knife in such fashion, my combat training is mostly for academic purposes as my policy is to talk my way out of any situation i can. i'm not a coward but fighting of any sort is hardly civilized. however the kinetic possibilities of the human body facinate me which is why i have studied such things as martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and parkour.

If I may interject, I suggest going to the Philippines. The homeland of the balisong more commonly known as the butterfly knife. Most of the natives can speak English, and in the more coastal areas of the Philippines there are most likely merchants who would be happy to sell you balisongs. I don't recommend going to Mindinao, the southern islands, though. That's where the Moro Islamic Liberation Front reside and they enjoy taking westerners as hostages.

I feel I must confess to not owning a folding knife of any sort.
I do however own some solid larger knives like the apple of my eye, a handmade Ghurka khukri bought from an artisan in Laos.
A very solid piece of craftsmanship.

Although I do not own it as of yet, I soon will purchase a Spyderco Kiwi folding knife.

Perfectly legal to carry in my country whose government dearly enjoys placing bans upon mostly everything you could imagine, while remaining fine looking (in my opinion) and also retaining the practicality of a locking folder.

I recognise that there is much animosity directed towards spyderco's rather unique designs, so I expect negative replies to this post, if any. However I must say that I enjoy the look of their products, mostly.
