That mindset is part of the problem right there. Cartoons needn't be something that must be outgrown. From the original Bugs Bunny cartoons being intended for all the moviegoing audiences to the modern-day mainstream success of The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park, the medium of animation has proven itself more than capable of being worth the attention of adult audiences. (Anime can also be pretty cool and good at this, too, but that's outside the scope of this board.)
Granted, this does little to counter the weird looks an adult gets for admitting to watching cartoons ostensibly marketed toward children. However, in the age of DVD box sets and Netflix it's easier than ever to find cartoons that are enjoyable for viewers of any age. Another thing that helps to dispel the gay pedophile manchild accusations is to establish yourself as a responsible sane adult who also has a hobby of watching cartoons and not delve into the fantarded excesses which many bronies have become guilty of.
