If you really think about it, allergies are kinda weird

How did we even evolve to have allergies? Wouldn't they be horribly detrimental to our survival?

There are lots of processes that accomplish both useful and detrimental things. Allergies are one example of this that come from the workings of our immune system. It is generally good that the human immune system is capable of adapting to new threats to learn how to fight them, but allergies are an example of when the immune system attacks "threats" that are perfectly safe for most people.
