High cholesterol? Anonymous 12/12/02(Sun)23:01 No. 10874

File 135448569083.gif - (25.18KB , 800x493 , Cholesterol-1.gif )

A year or so ago, a blood analysis showed I had high cholesterol.

Doctor says I should stop eating two eggs a day.

Right now I eat more vegetables, less meat and three eggs a week.

I took a new analysis and my cholesterol levels rose.

What can I do, /fit/ ?

Eat more eggs and less sugar.

To slightly expand on that, eggs contain cholesterol but they won't raise yours.

There are three kinds of cholesterol, HDL, LDL and VLDL. Of those, you want to keep VLDL levels as low as possible. Unfortunately, this can't be measured directly. Next time you get checked, get your LDL and triglyceride levels and ask whether either of those is high. High LDL isn't necessarily a problem if your triglyceride levels are low.

Allegedly, VLDL cholesterol spikes with sugar intake. Drop any sort of sugary beverages and candy, etc. Particularly the beverages. This includes fruit juice.

Yes cut sugar, and the sugar that you eat, have in the morning or after exercise. Don't mix high-carb meals and sugary drinks/sides; have sugar in meals/snacks with fat and fiber only.

Can try lowering overall carb intake if high. You say you eat "less meat" but you don't specify what you substituted it with (grains/legumes/dairy/eggs/etc.?). If you replaced it with carbs you might have done yourself a disservice with trigs. Or dairy...

Dairy fat can affect LDL numbers negatively greatly but supposedly it's the mostly harmless kind. Can try lowering dairy fat though it's not clear to me whether high LDL via dairy is really a concern or not. Safest course is to moderate.

Unless you have familial hypercholestemia then dietary cholesterol is probably not much a factor in negative indicators of blood cholesterol, as said above and afaik. I eat 3 eggs a day and don't worry about it.

Eat salmon a couple times a week.

Vegetarianism is the fastest way to lower cholesterol but two of the biggest pitfalls are eating cheese and eating lots of corn syrup laden foods. Sure they are vegetarian foods but they're not good for your liver at all.
You should avoid eggs altogether not because of the cholesterol, but because the albumin is not well tolerated by most people even if they don't get indigestion. It creates inflammation of the tissues.

Also, lower cholesterol doesn't equal healthier.

OP here: While I'm not going vegetarian, I'm gonna leave red meat altogether and change to chicken and fish. Also, I'm taking steps to reduce sugar and white cereals. (Thanks, >>10877 )

>>10893 For all I remember, eggs never gave me inflammation problems... are you sure of that?

How about oatmeal and amaranth? Are they good or bad for cholesterol levels?

And textured soy? Because man, that thing is cheap and if it can safely substitute meat I could marry the person who invented it.

OP returns: Forgot other thing I was about to ask: Any particular thin I should know about chicken and fish? Like not to overdo tuna because of mercury levels and stuff. Thanks again.

Don't overdo chicken, they put a lot of estrogens on them. I've heard of a pacient who developed gynecomastia for eating chicken daily.

Eggs and cholesterol is based on defunct studies. To live healthily, imagine how a neolithic man would have lived. Plain fruits and veg (boiling is obviously allowed) plain meat (anything you like, red meat isn't bad for you. Meat is only ever bad if you burn it) milk and eggs.

Cut out all processed shit. Cut out grains, sugar, all carby modern shit that people shovel down their gullets. Fruit and milk are the only reasonable sources of sugar.

Exercise as much as you can. Boxing, wrestling, judo, weights (SS, no isolation bullshit), sprint training.
Endurance is bad for your body.

If anyone tells you to go vegetarian, they're pushing their agenda down your throat. Humans are meant to be omnivores and vegetarians have to be very careful about getting their nutrition right.

If you're really interested in being healthier, a 48 hour fast every fortnight has been shown to lower body fat and improve bloods. Makes sense, because neolithic man would have gone periods without food.

[Citation needed] Whatever, I'm not trying to sell you anything here. This is actually a cheaper way of living and I'm just trying to help you out. Good luck man.

you're actually talking about a "paleolithic" man, "neolithic" is our times. So, no milk, 'cause you couldn't take it from a savage cow. The rest is right to me.

In Europe and Asia, milk is well digested in adults and is a good source of nutrition and protein. Is also cheap.

>neolithic

That's what I get for posting at 2am

i don't think neolithic man was all that healthy. his life expectancy was like 25 due to disease and malnutrition. it seems foolish to base your diet on people who ate whatever the fuck they could get their hands on because they had a lack of stable reliable foods. and our bodies have evolved since that era too.

and don't extended fasts like that just fuck up your metabolism and cause your body to go into fat storage mode so that it will have reserves to live off of when you aren't eating for days at a time?

what's wrong with just eating a sensible vegetarian diet every day? no meats, no fasts, no cleanses, no detox; just vegetables, grains, legumes, whiskey, and fruit?

> i don't think neolithic man was all that healthy. his life expectancy was like 25

Is this average life expectancy? Because the average is heavily skewed by high infant mortality, which is always high in societies without modern medical technology.

If you disregard children dying before the age of, say 5, you will probably find a life expectancy of adults to not be that different from today, probably in the 50-60 year range. This can be observed today in poorly developed countries where high infant mortality rates dictates large numbers of children per family to ensure survival into adulthood in sufficient quantities to care for their parents.

Now, that being said, you are probably right that early man was hardly a paragon of healthiness - living from day to day on whatever they could hunt or gather, and starving if they couldn't. Fat and meat would have been prized but their intake of HFCS was probably limited though, so comparing them to fast-food-eating coach potatoes of today they probably weren't so bad off after all.

All in all, a balanced diet seems to be the best thing in the long term.

>no protein or fat. Enjoy your lower IQ and taking supplements for the rest of your life

I'm not saying they were healthier per se, just that those are the conditions under which we evolved, so it makes sense to try and work with that. There is evidence that fasting improves your bloodwork and bodyfat and makes you feel more eneegetic and less hungry generally. Again, conditions under which we evolved.

With milk you have to keep in mind two things:
1) It is insulin-promoting
2) It _may_ be cancer-promoting

So it's an excellent post-intense-workout substance to ingest, like whey protein, as long as you don't plan on doing fat-burning exercise afterward.

But it's better off moderated because it may not be the most extremely healthy protein. Personally I limit it to 20-30grams/day.

>>10990

Extended fasts are (indirectly, often non-explictly-stated) based on the fact that your liver can take up to 24 hours or so of carb-less nourishment. The fewer carbs you eat, the less insulin you promote, and the more your body is forced to burn fat for fuel. As long as there are still carbs in your liver (~24 hours), you can keep your insulin down and promote fat-burning while your liver pumps glucose for your carb needs (loose terminology here).

It's only when your liver depletes (or comes close to depleting) liver glycogen that you start suffering negative effects of fasting.

(and there may be a period post-depletion where it is still useful to restrict carbs)

Eat your eggs but less saturated fats. High cholesterol in the diet doesn't necessarily raise yours.

Despite what doctors might say there is not enough research known on exactly what impacts cholesterol levels in the blood. Just eat a normal healthy died and don't worry.
