Dear /halp/!

I know that Microsoft Live Messenger will be scrapped in Q1 2013. But I did the mistake of "upgrading" to Skype. I uninstalled it and now I can't re install Messenger. Can someone please tell me how to?

You can connect Skype to Windows Live Messenger, you know.

The thing is, when I installed Skype, it totally uninstalled it. And now I can't reinstall it.

Okay. What happens when you try to install this?

Man I never liked Windows messenger back in the days of Windows 2000. Glad I never bothered with it because it sounds like it has become a complete catastrophuck.

It claims that Messenger is already installed.

I would bet that it's still installed then, and all that's happened is that the Skype installer removed your shortcuts from the start menu.

Try uninstalling Skype, then uninstall all of essentials (assuming that's how you installed messenger in the first place), then see if the installer still says its installed. I would bet not.

There's probably a way to force it to install, usually it's a command-line switch like -f or /f, sometimes passing /? will tell you what all the switches are. But uninstalling then reinstalling is going to be cleaner for you.

Also, worst case, just use something platform-neutral like Pidgin. They don't give a shit if Microsoft spent 5 billion dollars on Skype, they're still going to work with Live, AIM, ICQ, etc.

I've tried it, and it's pretty good. I'm also using Miranda IM, but I'll probably go back to Pidgin.

However, file transfer worked best in Messenger, and I've discovered that the multi-platforms has serious issues with that.

A couple more ideas... if it's still installed then msnmsgr.exe should be in C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger (if you're on 64-bit Windows it'll probably be in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Messenger). Just double-click it to launch it.

For older versions of WLM you could use this tool:

But it doesn't work with the last couple versions. But I bet if you ask the guy nicely he'll share his newest version with you, which should remove enough traces of the old version for Essentials to reinstall WLM.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

Is it possible to manually excise the traces of Messenger and then re-install it? Because the "uptate" of Live Essentials seems more like some kind of cock block for Skype.

Its certainly possible, but the trick is understanding what Essentials relies on to determine whether Messenger is installed.

Normally its just data kept in the Installer area of the registry, but with Messenger being part of Windows it could be more complicated than that.

Hmm... I've got an older HD where I used to run Messenger under a different user name. Is it possible to "transplant" it to the new?

Or is it just better to encourage my Messenger contacts to install some other IM that allows file transfer?

P.S. The sync folder of the old MSN was just bees knees. Is there any similar IM?
