Let's have a thread about the Spanish Empire. They were after all one of the largest and greatest empires in history.

Some questions to start us off: Do you think the Spanish were motivated by material concerns (ie. trade, plunder, taxation) or by religion in their conquests? What do you think of Spain's long (and often quite painful) decline following the death of Phillip II? Do you think the inbreeding of the Habsburg line doomed them to failure? What of the Bourbon line of the 18th century and their attempts at reform? The Napoleonic occupation and collapse of the Empire was a traumatic affair. What is your opinion of the independence movements of the Empire? Why? Finally, the Carlist wars pitted Liberals and Republicans against Conservatives and Monarchists, as the last large-scale succession wars in history. Were the Carlists trying to preserve a horribly corrupt church and aristocratic system? Or were the Liberals out to destroy Spanish tradition and all that made Spain spiritual and great, despite its material backwardness?

Then I can say, Spanish cuisines were not bad after all.

sorry that you generally hate black people (using classic /pol/ black people/pick one,

but afro-spanish colonies have and had amazing cuisine, not only due to the fusion of spanish and african styles and flavors, but of french and indian- Trinidad and Tobago has some of the rgeatest food I've ever eaten- one of the women on the beach waved her hand at me (like- oh, get out of here!) when i asked for just a dash of pepper sauce on everything, having seen the gallons everyone else poured on their food.

i think your preconceived notions are preventing you frome xperiencing amazing things

Critique each other's solutions to modern day Islamic terrorism:
> Add distinctly Islamic influences or sections to the militaries or police departments where Islamic extremism is ride.
>Create positive Muslim role models, possible in 'action roles' where they can be brash, adventurous and 'sacrifice themselves' without sacrificing their lives or harming others, for young Muslims to follow
I see the long view problem as encouraging a polarised and religion charged world that could lead to larger scale conflict in the future.
However, it would be the kind of large scale conflict the West is more traditionally skilled at dealing with.

... and restoring the Caliphate is a bad thing? The Middle East has been decaying since the Ottoman Caliphate was losing it's influence and was effectively manipulated by the British and the French.
Well maybe there are, but you just don't hear of it because our media doesn't want to cover that. A recent example. The 'Occupy' movement was being broadcasted on Youtube a whole month before any American news channel broadcasted it on television. The media broadcasts what they want to. You hear what they want you to hear, unless you seek it out yourself.

There are individuals who do not count for the majority. They may speak for a greater group, but it can't ever be considered valid without a majority present.

>... and restoring the Caliphate is a bad thing?
if you are a very devout muslim, and don't ever question the dominant belief system and 'religiously' follow all the many rules, it would probably be peachy
if your personal understanding of islam is opposed by your local/regional hierarchy, you 'would' conform to their version or be declared apostate and treated rather harshly
and if you want to convert to islam, you had better be very very careful and choose the right sect... and never change your mind, because islam takes an 'extreme' view about backsliding and apostasy
if you can freely submit and fit yourself to the prevailing religious faction, and can live within a strict set of rules of conduct, and have no natural tendencies to ask irritating questions of 'authority', and have no desire to explore or create new ideas or think beyond the bounds of what is considered 'right' and 'proper' by something that was written centuries ago in another culture, and are comfortable with having most parts of your life directed by the dead hand of the past... you should do well - because islam will NOT EVER fit itself to your will or nature

>The media broadcasts what they want to. You hear what they want you to hear, unless you seek it out yourself.
pretty much... but don't you think it's slowly changing for the better with all the advancing communication technologies and the younger generations relying much more on non-traditional and non-corporate news sources?

They weren't persecuted if they payed a tax. I've not heard of this kind of alternative in European Christian countries. Catholics/Jews were simply exiled or killed.
Surely Islam not changing shows solidarity? I mean, if something hasn't changed for over a thousand years, that means whatever they were doing was correct? Ever heard the phrase 'If it ain't broken, don't fix it'? Even today, there are only two main divisions, Sunni and Shia, the rest are very small. But in Christianity/Hinduism/Buddhism there are lots of divisions each representing a large group.
If you look at Islamic history, they were increasing and expanding for quite a while. They gave Al-Andalus (the Islamic part of Iberia) a place on the map. They pretty much created the building blocks for the mighty Spanish Empire, which was the largest/richest empire on the Atlantic Ocean until the British took India. Yet the Muslims started out of tribes in the desert and converts.
This shows their system works, and it also works to help create the foundation of other empires.
>non-corporate news sources
Oh how I wish that was true.
If something becomes large enough, it will be marketed. Eventually. Youtube has ads on videos. Even fucking internet memes have become marketed, you can buy products with internet memes on it.

They supposed to. Money is an intermediary, not a commodity, or an investment.

Commodities (like gold) can swing any which way they want based on demand/ supply and all that bullshit. Investments are supposed to appreciate in value. But money has to do one thing, and one thing only: facilitate the exchange of goods and services.

Money ain't supposed to have fixed value over time, if you want that, buy assets. Money has to have an evolution in value that best suits economic expansion (cause we all like economic expansion no doubt). And economic expansion is best served by a currency supply that rises slightly faster than the economy, causing moderate inflation. Low enough to make short term liquidity viable, but high enough to devalue debt backlog in the private sector over time, and encourage people to spend and invest funds in stead of sitting on them.

And no, inflation doesn't make us poorer - whatever money you have ain't just sitting there. At the worst, it's in the bank, generating a modest interest. At best, it's in prime investments, growing faster than inflation. Or you put it in assets that deliver utility, like a house or a car.

Where in the world was the first civilisation?
By civilisation I would like these three features to exist:
Figure(s) of authority
Currency/Trade system
Some kind of marriage system. By this I mean the women aren't shared between multiple men or vice versa.

From my basic, and most likely wrong, knowledge, I think it's around the Middle Eastern area. Maybe as far south as Kenya, or as far east as Iran/Pakistan/India or as far west as Turkey. I don't think it would've been north of that, but I'm not very knowledgeable in the area, so I may well be wrong.

Thanks for reading.

Then I'll have to point out that the Congo and the Mali empire are worlds apart, and that statements pertaining to the former should indeed not be generalized for the entirety of Africa. Congo civilizations are but one of the many groups that popped up around Africa, but one limited by peculiar circumstances.

The point I was originally trying to make is that some civilizations could indeed be civilizations, without leaving behind obvious and imposing architectural relics (the Mali empire did in fact leave obvious traces - the cool stuff in Timbuktu most obviously), and that this warps contemporary perceptions.

Hello, /hi/! I'd like to enlist your collective help. I've resolved to write a book on a subject I absolutely adore and will never tire of researching, but the problem is, I'm only entering college this fall, and never learned to properly cite and research in high school. I've started ordering several very in-depth volumes on my subject, and will be traveling in the next few months to several sites (such as the home of the subject, and the building wherein many of his original letters are housed) and would like to ask /hi/ how I should go about researching and citing my sources- I'm aware of MLA citation, but what else should I be aware of? I don't want to wait until writing research papers in school have prepared me, I really, REALLY want to start researching now. So, could /hi/ explain the intricacies of citing sources, what to put in a bibliography, format etc.? Thanks so much in advance.

When you break down crime you're supposed to use poverty statistics and side-bars qualifying those statistics using criteria of region/state/ethnicity/education status.

You don't want people to think that race was your only consideration, and you ALSO want to take lots of different things into consideration so that you can impress people with minutia.

To be fair, I'm not the one saying that sugar is worse than alcohol, I'm just the guy saying excessive intake of anything is bad.

Sugar, like salt, is in ridiculous amounts of packaged foods, ingredients, and the like. It's fucking hell trying to piece together a meal that doesn't involve buying fruits, vegetables, and raw meat and making it all from scratch. I'm fine with some amount of cooking (baking chicken, cooking pasta or rice, etc.), but (for example) fuck if I'm gonna spend the hours it takes to go from tomatos to tomato sauce on a worknight.

Is Catholicism the more progressive of the Christian sects? They oppose the death penalty, war, poverty and social inequality. They espouse racial tolerance and universal health care. They support unionisation. I can think of any Protestant branch opposing at least one of those
