Does anyone have more knowledge of the history of Ethiopia. I know that it has had a good share of its own kindgoms for over 3,000 years, and that it has been a major trading power from the 5th century BCE to the late middle ages. Got any more info on this country, guys??? Picture is unrelated btw.

Major is reletive thing, and only is fair when considering their petty suroundings. My favorite episode in Ethiopian history happened in the 19th centuary when it was invaded by Britiain. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1868_Expedition_to_Abyssinia . I like this because there are two modern narratives. In the first noble King Theodore, who united the country and braught peace to the land, is defeated by a technology supperior British invador who plunder the country and leave behind a politcal vacum that leads to years of war. In another, ethipoia under an upstart chieftain know for his cruelty, insanity, taxes is libreated by a small British force. Theodore founded ethiopa but its immediatly clear he wasn't a nice guy.

I think that's a pretty common theme among "fathers of nations". Charlemagne, Qin Shi Huang, Bismark, Augustus, every Russian ruler ever... Ruthless politics forge nations. The classical measure for judging them is lasting impact, even if it is built on a pyramid of skulls.

At the same time when Assyria destroyed Israel, the Ethiopians were dominating some parts of the Nile delta. Their first contact with Israel occurs in II Kings, 17:4, at which time Ethiopia had conquered southern Egypt and created the XXV Dynasty, to whom king Oseas asked for help against the Assyrians.

Only that it was practically the only country in Africa not to be colonised by western powers (apart from the Kingdom of Italy in 1936-41)partly because of it's embrace of Christianity.
