ITT: Books that have powerfully impacted/moved you.

Really? How did it impact you? I mean it's good book, love Camus, but it didn't really do it for me.

Dostoevsky Crime and Punishment comes closest to having an impact on me, mainly because it's my favorite book and I read it at least once every year since I was 16. And I still feel that I don't really explored or understood every topic in the book.

the redemption part is far from convincing and the whole plot is silly if you take a step back. Moreover you have Russian lit snobs joking about killing random people to make a point or actually doing it to quote Raskolnikov in court:

also see Yury Mozhnov and Maxim Golovatskikh. such cases

Norwegian Wood.
Simpler than a lot of Murakami, but definitely had the biggest impact on me.

Oh shit, Murakami.

For me, it wasn't Norwegian Wood, rather A Wild Sheep Chase.

Even broadly would I say Murakami's works in general, his writing speaks to anyone who appreciates isolating themselves, whether be in a cabin out in the furthest reaches of the woods or at the bottom of an abandoned well.

I just recently watched the movie adaptation of Norwegian Wood, Do Not Watch That Movie, for the love of everything, don't.

Olaf Stapledon -- Star Maker

Its a very nice stretching of the imagination, limbers you up nicely for musings on consciousness and the universe.

My favorite's Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World.

As for stuff that's powerfully moved me: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

The book 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time' really opened my eyes when I read it when I was about 7.

Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino. And I'm even into japanese stuff really, but i like this. it's basically a book about loneliness. and people in big cities. anyone that ever saw a neon sign in new york will like this i think.

I'm a rusfag and I found it annoyingly moralistic.

Other than that, I loved the contrast between the MC and the inspector(? been a while, I actually read it back in school, can't remember the names). The fucked up psychological state of the protagonist was also very familiar.

The Happy Prince and Other Stories by Oscar Wilde, in particular the Nightingale and the Rose. i read it when i was small and it emotionally fucked me up.
