So I just watched Project X, recommended to me by a comrade. And As is my habit, I went and checked movie reviews after I was done, to see how my impressions of a movie match up to the general consensus.
I was struck by the harsh tone of the reviews, and some peculiar points they made. In particular, the characterization of the main characters as totally unlikable, unrealistic, chauvinist pigs. I found that stunning; I think the movie painted an accurate picture of the mindset of white, middle class adolescents. Of course they weren't all that witty, and they engaged in bullying behaviour, and misogyny and sexism. That's the reality of man.
Why do you think they got their panties up in a bunch? My guess is that film critics, who grew up nerds in all probability, took offence to the suggestion that all it takes to turn their idolized nerd-selves into pigs like the rest of the mob, is circumstance. They all want movies with witty, smart and sensitive nerds in it - which does not correspond to reality, while the characters in this picture did in fact display natural behaviour.
