So it looks like the spoilers about the Force Tree are true.

What say you /me/? Do you like this new retconned origin of the force? It's certainly better than midichlorians.

Midichlorians are just mitochondria. They're the prequel's Kessel Run. Lucas has a tendency to hear what he wants to hear. At least that time he renamed them.

Is it really? Seems even worse, to be honest.

What's new is a little detail that makes the fictional world seem just a little more bullshit. If you start from the premise that Star Wars was never about telling an amazingly mindblowing story but all about building a memorable world for that story to take place in, you can see how that can be a huge blow to people's appreciation of the franchise.

>midichlorians
An unmitigated disaster. Had Lucas dropped any such nonsense in the first films there would be no Star Wars franchise. The explanation given by Sir Alec Guiness's Obi-Wan was quite sufficient:

>An energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.

See how sufficient that explanation is? The greatest strength of the original films is their commitment to Science Fantasy. Most people don't have the patience or the intelligence for hard Sci-Fi; Science Fantasy however, has no need to make sense to tell its stories. It's the best of both worlds: all the flashy weapons, weirdness, space, robots, and clones of Science Fiction without any of the boring explanation of how things that don't exist theoretically work.

It took nineteen words to explain the force in absolution. Midichlorians weren't a such stupid idea just because of how stupid the idea was: the whole gimmick was unnecessary to begin with. As a Jedi Master, Qui Jinn should have been able to feel Anakin's strength with the force (from leagues away).

I could see the books serving a purpose in explaining the origin of the Jedi, because they are people and people are complicated, and Star Wars is a story about people, but I think any further attempt to explain the force can only be subtractive to the quality of the Star Wars story.
