Here you go, kids, you made it through the first hurtle. Use it or lose it.

Same rules apply:
This is not /me/. /me/ is for consumers and end users, 'I like this song' kind of bullshit. /mus/ is for music discussion; that is, playing, performing, and composing, techniques, methods, and sheet music (pdf isn't ideal, but it's better than forcing images).

I just went through and cleaned out all the /me/ and /b/ threads. From now on expect to be banned for them.

I think we need a thread dedicated to various resources that can be used for learning, practicing, recording, and anything else that can be of aid to fellow musicians. I'll start:

http://www.songsterr.com
Great guitar tab site that plays the song for you. Basically Guitar Pro without having to buy the program.

http://www.productiontrax.com
http://www.taxi.com
Two good sites for selling and buying royalty-free music.

Lastly, I have a complete guide on learning Logic. I'll dump it if the mods are okay with me posting 37 pdf files.

That's all for right now. I know I've got some good books lying around that I could list but I'm too lazy at the moment. I may list some more in a day or two.

So, #/mus/ has been officially started in the 7chan irc.

Perhaps we might get a bit organized as to lets-teach-each-other-random-/mus/-crap but for now, the channel is made and the glorious kingdom of #noise has been claimed this day.

see u /mus/tards in there :3

Listen up /mus/, it's survey time. A simple answer is enough, no need for petty arguments here.

1. How old are you?
2. What and when did you start learning to play?
3. What instrument are you trying to master?
4. How much music theory do you know, if any?

I'll start...

3. Piano, Guitar, Bass, Uke, Accordion, Theremin, Live Electronics, mandolin
4. Pursuing Bachelors of Music in Composition... highest theory course I have taken is a graduate course called "Advanced Post 1960s Analysis With a Focus On Postmodern Borrowing Practices" or something like that. Currently taking a less advanced set theory class. then again I do not believe in the existence of music theory ala Frederick Rzewksi.

I started learning piano formally in fourth grade, but I was improvising with a Casio my aunt gave me in first grade. In fifth grade I started learning saxophone in band.

I have already mastered the piano.

I am pursuing a doctorate in composition, so more than you.

Hey I'm forming a black metal band but I just can't think of a name retarded and pretentious enough.

I think maybe I should go with

Fuckpussycuntrapesatansatansatanrapedeathmurda

Apparently all black metal bands need a name like that

it's totally not hilarious for people who aren't metal fans and don't take themselves so fucking seriously

You did not look at the other half of the list; in that case.

Also a "black and white" distinction is warranted when the vast majority possesses a uniform fallacy.

yes I did ya dingus.

>Deathclock- satirical made for TV death metal band
>Megadeth- heavy metal
>Black Murda (actually black merda)- afrocentric hard rock band from 70s

I enjoy arguing for the redemption of a genre I really dont' like at all though. I disagree with the second part of what you said... I see every band as making a specific statement that is articulated via a syntax of generic aggregation. That is... no band is purely a black metal band (periodization is the result of people writing ABOUT music). Instead, a bands language may be most indebted to something like black metal... but the nursery rhymes they heard as children, the rhythm of their favorite speakers voice, the music from their favorite computer game, a concert their dad took them to, the ring tone on their cell phone, all have unavoidable subconscious influence on their music. Not to mention other more obvious and outwardly stated generically transcendent influences. Honestly... I feel that there is no uniformity in a generic distinction like black metal... and in general black and white distinctions based on a system of easy organization created by critics and writers is really silly. I think most critics and writers agree with me... and take periodization with a grain of salt.

Perfect pitch/relative pitch

Which is better and how do I get it?

I've heard relative pitch is much more useful but whatever, if I manage to pick up either of those my life will become a lot easier.

Is there like any practice excercises or something I can try to do to develop/achieve this?

Pic unrelated.

>> No. 2073
You really don't develop it. Decent relative pitch comes to everyone naturally after a couple of years of practice. The term perfect pitch is thrown around a lot, but there usually isn't a single person in a whole professional concert orchestra who actually has it to any useful extent. Also, the people who say they have it generally don't.

Perfect pitch is better. It's the same as relative pitch, just more precise. It might be considered more useful simply because it's something most people actually have a chance of developing, but I suppose it might make you feel more 'set' in certain keys...

I knew a vocal major who simply sang middle C then went up/down step by step until she found the note she had heard. That's how she passed her pitch recognition whatsits. She said it wasn't worth the effort.
>> No. 2075
Perfect pitch is a gimmick. Relative is all you need
>> No. 2084
Relative pitch it is then. I've heard it is more useful, but I thought it was better to ask. Funnily enough though, I know a lot of people with perfect pitch. You can play like 5-9 notes and they can say all of them.

It's kinda scary.

Thanks for all your help. Other than the website given, anybody else got anything?

Any good local rock bands in your area? I see a lot that are fun to go and watch, though not really what'd I'd describe as really good bands.

I hate rap. I don't know why, I really shouldn't.

I listen to a lot of folk (hurhur particularly Bob Dylan) and Punk (not mainstream punk, that's not really my thing) and a lot of the time, it's a really basic background and them just speaking or whatever on top.

Okay, maybe not punk, but Tombstone Blues by Bob Dylan really comes to mind, where he's more or less saying the words rather than singing them. And I like that song.

So I imagine there can be/is good rap out there, I just haven't heard it yet.
M.I.A. sounds okay I guess though, but still.

Also oldschool hip hop is fun too.

I'm bored and getting cynical of music altogether whenever I get tired of an album that I like. It's getting me horribly fucking down and I don't feel like doing anything.

I still play piano daily and sometimes noodle around on guitar, but it's just that, noodling. The music that I want to play and comes to my head is band-specific and I don't have any people to collaborate with or any decent recording equipment to work by myself with.

The type of music that hits me in the gut is loud, noisy, tuneful. Pic related, along with Lightning Bolt (RtS-HM) and Nirvana. I know this isn't the right place to ask for music recs, but I'm desperate for any kind of inspiration as a musician and listener. If this keeps up much longer, I'd rather just work on writing.

Can't say I'm a fan of Noise Rock, but I've heard Cell-Scape and thought some bits were pretty cool. What are your favourite kinds of music?

Repetitive, leads nowhere, simplistic form, zero progression, feels like a partita performed on multiple instruments.

Knowledge of music theory isn't necessary to realize the lackings in that piece. Just music knowledge.

Extremely boring.

It made me imagine really fucking badly written Deathcore. You know, the sort that just goes, "CHUG-CHUG-CHUG-CHUG" for 3 minutes.

Yep, that's the Classical equivalent.
