Listen up /mus/, it's survey time. A simple answer is enough, no need for petty arguments here.

1. How old are you?
2. What and when did you start learning to play?
3. What instrument are you trying to master?
4. How much music theory do you know, if any?

I'll start...

4. Pursuing Bachelors of Music in Composition... highest theory course I have taken is a graduate course called "Advanced Post 1960s Analysis With a Focus On Postmodern Borrowing Practices" or something like that. Currently taking a less advanced set theory class. then again I do not believe in the existence of music theory ala Frederick Rzewksi.

I started learning piano formally in fourth grade, but I was improvising with a Casio my aunt gave me in first grade. In fifth grade I started learning saxophone in band.

I have already mastered the piano.

I am pursuing a doctorate in composition, so more than you.

The first thing i ever could play a song on was an old electric chord organ when i was like ten i guess. But first real lessons were piano starting in 5th grade.

Piano/Synthesizer, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Cello (hopefully)

A fair amount, I just got done taking a college level theory course and made an A

Anonymous 10/08/02(Mon)00:15 No. 2118

1: 17
2: keyboard (synthesizer now) at the age of 13
3: keyboard/synth, but not synth as in creating beats n shit, but playing it, as a piano only with beautifull sounds and sound effects
4: Music theory as in chords and such, abcdefg is the most I know, but I know how my synth works, and I know how to compose music (recently recorded my 3rd ep with my progressive BM 2-man project thing).

imo there's no need to know that much theory, just know your intervals, that's all you need.

3. I don't think you can master anything, I just want to produce something that's expressive and sounds nice...But I play the guitar, ukulele and piano.
4. Chord structure, mostly which notes to play to go with which chords are in use. I know a lot of classical piano music, and improv comes naturaly.

2. Started on bass about 6 years ago I think, and guitar two years later. I also do vocals but I wouldn't call that singing (it's mostly black metal style screaming).
3. I'm not actually trying to master anything, as long as I can play what I compose all is well.
4. None whatsoever. I play by ear exclusively.

2.14, guitar, then bass, then piano, then singing.

3.All western instruments are essentially the same, I took the theory I leanred from guitar and played some Iron Maiden on the keys first time I tried, but guitar is my focus.

4. Enough to hold my own in a good jam session, circle of fifths, the western modes, and a few exotic modes like hirojoshi and hungarian minor to make people say "whoa that guys a badass".

also, fags who rip on guitar players because they browsed the shithole ultimate guitar forum and made a steryotype.
