Found a copy of the Mythic Vista Spiros Blaak Campaign setting. I like the idea of lost/fallen/no gods. I tried the Midnight campaign setting for that purpose.

I have always loved the drow in D&D, to include playing drow characters if possible. All this started way back in the early 80s when I was playing a game with an elf character. We decided to randomize all physical character aspects and I wound up with black skin  Since there were no rules for a drow PC the thenn DM and myself looked at the monster manual (were the drow was described) and applied some of the abilities to my PC. Nightshade was her name and she was a F/MU/T (old school here). I had a blast and have always liked using them.

What I would like to know is, why there are so many sourcebooks about drows, vampires, demons etc. - and so very few about ghosts and angels, which are IMO much more interesting! :(

Maybe because a lot of the evil ways are much more descriptive in the things they can do. Too often good is shown with limitations on their actions because of their (good) nature. Evil (or those seen as evil) can kill, maim, torture, or just about anything to anyone (including their own species). Those that are good are usually constrained to hurting bad and killing only really evil things. Mind you I am generalizing here, not stating that this is how it is with all good and evil.

I would not mind seeing a race/class of "angel" that has a bit of the dark-side to kick some righteous butt. Thinking a Batman/Punisher mix hehehe.

You definitely can find such "darker" angels in games like In Nomine, Everlasting (Book of Light) and d20 Anger of Angels - not to mention Pandemonium, where the angels look and behave like Lovecraftian horrors! But I for one would like to see more of the good, bright side, to balance all the darkness and evil.

As to ghosts, this explanation doesn't hold. Ghosts have so much potential, but still there are very few good sourcebooks about them, comparing, say, to vampires. Pity!

Putting out another request now that this is "officially" released. Note that this is different from the previously linked Dungeon Survival Guide.

The reason there are so few angels and demons in D&D is that they are both religious. For a very long time thanks to the RPG = debil worship panic, those entities were not part of D&D and had their serial numbers filed off. Anyone interested in playing an angel may not bother to look up archons or devas. Angels also suffer from the major problem with ghosts.

Every culture on the planet has an idea of what is a ghost. Many of these are completely different. Ghosts tend to work best when they're mysterious. They do things that "break the rules". It's very hard to make balanced mechanics for that while still preserving that mystery. They also have the problem of being very RP-centric in their threat and groups that prefer a hack-and-slash approach will have problems seeing a ghost as a threat.

If you like the idea of using ghosts more frequently, you'll want to look into the Ravenloft campaign setting and the Ghostwalk campaign setting. If you play 4th Edition, look at Hammerfast. Your best resource for writing adventures is actually things like creepypastas and old ghost stories. The information's out there, but they don't get the focus that drow, vampires, orcs, etc. get because those races can be used in both RP-heavy and hack-and-slash campaigns effectively.
