Maybe we should not rush to judgement of our former companion, gentlemen.

I dare say that, if that's the case, such an appalling deficiency should be more worthy of our sympathy instead of our spite, for we might be wine lovers but also we are gentlemen and understanding is, and must be, a characteristic virtue of our fellowship.
