I am currently trying to beat Metal Slug 4 on one life with all prisoners and other arbitrary point crap. It's so tedious compared to previous Metal Slugs thanks to the lazy level design. Still enjoyable in bursts though, I just can't handle resetting to try again immediately like I can with the other games.

I just started playing Skyrim again. I bought a new PS3 not too long ago and bought Skyrim Legendary Edition. I've never played the expansions before so this should keep it fresh.

It's weird how after giving this game little breaks and not overplaying the hell out of it like I first did keeps it entertaining for the longest time.

I can't say I liked Enemy Unknown much, it was fun the first time around, but in the second and third playthrough? All those fucking interrupts and design flaws start to grate on the nerves.

Spot an enemy? Five second cutscene (disabling third person and action cam does not stop this, I disabled every goddamn thing and it doesn't stop this) of them getting a free move and getting behind cover.

Shoot an enemy? Five second cutscene (or overhead camera going back and forth between shooter and target if you have action and third person cams disabled) of your soldiers hitting or missing.

End your turn? Wait twenty seconds as every enemy makes its predetermined move (which are based on your actions for that turn). Sometimes the game will even hang when it's doing this. Why the fuck does it hang? It already knows what it's going to do and the results of every action!

Start a bomb disposal mission for the umpeenth time? Have Chen explain what the fuck those goddamn power nodes are again for the umpeenth time while stealing control from you to force your camera to focus on said power nodes. I'm sure the goldfish that play EU appreciate being reminded every goddamn time.

That goddamn bug where cyberdiscs or minitanks dying in doorways turn them into permanent obstructions? Never fixed, not even in Enemy Within. Really fucks over Ironman games.

Two goddamn moves per soldier. You can run then shoot, but can't shoot then run (without appropriate training); you can't reload then run at all even if you have the skills to shoot then run; you can run twice across an entire field or run two squares in two separate moves because those totally take the same number of actions. The 90s called, Firaxis, they have this ancient technology called "Action Points", don't reinvent the wheel with a fucking rectangle.

Shitty training options/lack or retraining option. I get the idea of "sticking with your choices", but HEAT ammo vs. shredder rockets is not a goddamn skill choice, it's an equipment choice, that's akin to telling me I can't equip plasma rifles because I "chose" to equip a regular rifle at the beginning of the game. I shouldn't have to retrain anyone to swap their goddamn weapons or learn to carry an extra fucking grenade. XCOM elite soldiers are apparently drooling retards.

One. Fucking. Squad. XCOM is a global initiative funded by every major country with in-house hyper-advanced research and manufacturing facilities, and the ability to manufacture reverse-engineered alien UFO interceptors with fusion cannons in ten days... but they can't build barracks anywhere else or build additional Skyrangers? Oh, hey, three countries asking for help? I'll just send six Colonels to help one country and have the other 93 soldiers in the barracks masturbate for the rest of the day.

That being said, I just finished playing Enemy Within. New toys are fun, but does nothing to fix any of the above problems.

I picked up The Bureau on sale, and am relatively satisfied with my $7.50 purchase.

If you accept that it's not an X-Com game, and simply had names for equipment transplanted in with little comprehension and care taken to make sure those names fit in the original context, it's turned out to be a mildly fun third person shooter. The squad combat system seems to have been glommed in late in development to, again, take a completely unrelated game and turn it into an X-Com game. That's probably the least fun aspect, I half want to not take any squad members with me on missions.

Judge Dredd: Dredd vs Death

Gunplay is pretty mediocre, but there's enough fanservice to keep me going. Also I got stuck in chapter 6 because I didn't know I was supposed to blow up barrels to destroy a wall in order to advance. The barrels weren't immediately obvious and throughout the rest of the game, especially chapter 6, all the other barrels couldn't be interacted with. Now I'm on the parts where you have to chase down the Dark Judges and it fucking blows.

Oh? Mind telling what games you're playing on your PSP? Your post made me feel like digging mine up again.

I'm borrowing my brother's 3DS to see if it's worth getting one of my own. So far the console seems pretty good, but for some reason he only got 2 Naruto games for it, which makes it kinda hard to form an opinion on the 3DS library. I want to play Mario Kart, goddammit, not some mediocre anime brawler.

Just finished Gone Home. I don't recommend it to anyone. Haven't felt this betrayed/ripped off by the game community in a long time.

Wonderful 101. It's an ass whipping. Which is something I feel a lot of modern games miss out on. Very Japanese in that it drops you in the game and goes, "Learn it or die". Not a lot of hand holding (things will flash on the screen for a second to help you out, but there is so much constant action it's difficult to see what it is). It took a while to get into the groove, mostly due to the quick pace and amount of stuff occurring on screen. Once you figure out how to effectively use your Wonder powers, the game is still an ass whipping but you feel rewarded for your success.

Super Mario 3D LAND on the 3DS. About to complete the game at 100%. All coins. All levels beaten with Luigi, all Gold flags (top of the flag pole). Only 4 Special Worlds away from completing this task.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2. I hate this game. Arcade Mode is too easy, but playing on line gets me dominated in a matter of seconds. With people not getting together to play video games in the same room anymore, there's no real good training area to effectively hone your fight style. It's unfortunate I suck so much, since I used to dominate on the earlier games (Tekken, T2, T3).

Exactly what you said. Its misleading and tricks people into thinking that its something it isnt, while still charging you $20 to play a walking simulator. I would consider buying it if it were $10, if I had an interest in gay culture and were a book, so that it might be an improvement.

Just bought E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy because there was a big hubbub over it and a friend asked me to, and it's been a real trip so far and I'm loving it.

I think I missed a real opportunity though, I went psyker because my usual route is always magic/special power/mind before I fiddle with other stuff in any game, but the physical augmentations and weapons look pretty cool. Still, nothing beats summoning demons and a squad of goons while making enemies crazy and teleporting all over the place.

DMC is free right now for PS plus members so I decided to check it out. I really don't get the hate for the game. The game itself is pretty solid, fluid and fun. Also very beautiful looking.

Besides the sometimes cringe worthy attempts on making Dante seem edgy, I really don't see the problem with it. The character model itself isn't really that bad. He looks cool in his own kind of way, and we get to see many preposterous/badass situations just like in the original games.

They seriously described it as "Shakespearean." See attached video for satire.

Forced replayablility. Rather than make the game actually replayable because it's fun, they shoehorn in a bunch of collectibles you can't get the first time around. The reason this is bad is because the final level ranking takes completion into account, and in order to get 100% completion, you need to get all the collectibles. You can't get top ranking on every level the first time, and are then forced to replay them.

Enemies are not aggressive.

Even the hardest difficulty when playing the game for the first time is like baby mode.

You can break the combat by fully upgrading the Drive move, which is possible thanks to DLC which gives you 3 upgrade points at the beginning of the game.

Combo rankings go by damage given/taken rather than move variation and skill. Since the enemies are unaggressive this means that you're pretty much guaranteed to get anywhere from an S-SSS ranking per fight.

Damage boosts, which weren't in the previous games, allow you to break the combo rankings even further.

The unlockable difficulties, compared to previous Devil May Cry games, are just annoying rather than challenging.

They try to give you a joke here and there, but the game takes itself too seriously and goes all in-your-face about shit like killing a pregnant woman.

Dessicated squirrel semen.

Gimmicky bosses which follow the rule of 3. Find their gimmick, use it against them three times. In previous Devil May Cry games, the bosses used a variety of skills comparable to the ones you had.

The guns are hardly useful.

Ninja Theory recycled a bunch of mechanics they used in Heavenly Sword.

Social commentary, in the game which is part of a series that shouldn't have any.

Combo variety isn't half as diverse as the previous Devil May Cry games.

Even if you do a lot of combos, as discussed earlier, there's no point to it since you can just fudge the game's ranking system with damage buffs.

They made Dante into a half demon half angel, when in the other games he's supposed to be half demon half human. It's kind of a George Lucas thing, where it was a change that had no point to it.

It runs on Unreal Engine 3, which means that textures will pop in and out seemingly at random.

Virgil is questionably flamboyant with his choice of clothing.

The chick has a stupid ass star tattoo on her forehead.

Side missions are gimmicky and repetitive.

They did that stupid thing where the white wig falls on his head and Dante says "Not in a million years." Sort of like a "Fuck you." to people who like how Dante looked before.

The Slurm Queen is a boss, and the dialog between her and Dante is absolutely ridiculous.

Not discussed in the stream, but it pretty much rips off the plot of They Live.

"My Girlfriend is the President"
A visual novel about a guy whose girlfriend has become the president of the United States of Japa... Nippon, established after an alien spaceship crash-landed on the capitol and, in a daring move, brainwashed the world so everyone would believe that Japa... Nippon always had a parlamentarial, presidential democracy. You know, like the United States of Americ... Ameriga. Only the main character remembers what actually happened. Oh, and so does the young-girl looking alien (the culprit) and the president of the Russi... Rusian Federation. There is also the AI of the space-ship, your ministers (one of them being your hot kinda-like older sister) and a few others who all can be dated.

The story is light-hearted and fun, feeling more like like a loving parody than anything else. Give it a try, it's good.

I've been meaning to get good enough to beat this without continuing for some time now. I just always put it off because it's a really mentally exhausting game due to its length. Probably the worst case of too-long-for-its-own-good I've ever dealt with in something trying to be an arcade game. Which is a real damn shame too because I think its scoring system is a load of fun.

It used to be very bad, yeah. After the re-release it's much better game quality-wise, but it's still terribly bland. To describe it in one sentence: pretty, but boring. Same MMORPG tropes and mechanics we've seen for... shit, almost a decade now?

I actually did, but people still say it's horrible.

I do get your point, and I think that nowadays, MMORPG need way more innovation. For starters, I think the should focus way more on the story, and make your actions actually matter. Also, if the actions of a community actually changed the world, it would be awesome, and it would really have replay value in the form of exploring this new world.

Since I think I explained myself really bad, let me give you an example.

Imagine if there was a world, where the players were actually rivals, and then a big war came out, one sides wipes out the other, so a resistance group will be made, the cities would be destroyed, and new quests open. But this only happens because one side wipes the other, if it would be even, or peace would be made before this mass destruction, nothing of it would happen. That would make a dynamic world, and not only that, maybe some real life heroes would be created, F.E. a player who slaughtered thousands of enemies, or holded a position so everybody else could escape.

I liked Bravely Default, but the 5th chapter is the last enjoyable one. The rest is pretty much a joke, dragging on a "twist" that even Shyamalan could not telegraph this much. Couldn't bring myself to finish the game. Just couldn't.

It works well as long as it has content, but it tries to last longer than it physically can, and there lies the realization that Bravely Default bites off way more than it can chew. As sad as it is to say, it's no successor to Final Fantasy. It tries to be, but it's just plain damn not.

Tomb Raider Underworld. I am disappointed.
The good: A lot more graphical detail than the previous games.
The bad:
1) The camera is goofed. It's too close to Lara and they reduced the view angle so much that it is hard to see anything.
2) The levels are tiny.
3) The gameplay is very linear. Executing a series of moves to go from point A to point B does take some focus, but there isn't anything else to do beyond follow that string of moves and wait for the following cut scene to finish. This is one step away from Dragon's Lair gameplay.
4) The writing is terrible. Angel of Darkness quality plotting.
5) The game is very short. Where previous games could take a week or two, this one could be finished in a weekend, 12 hours or so of game time.

now that I have a cheap laptop that is an upgrade anyway from it, I'm just plugging it into my tv via hdmi and I'm using a usb controller

I'm currently mostly looking for games to play like that rather than staying on a desktop, but other than emulating SNES, NES, etc. I'm only looking at a few modern titles like Risk of Rain, GRID, Split Second, shit like that.

I guess I'm turning casual, but the fucking games released these days as AAA titles are

1. easy
2. badly/generically written
3. cater to teens/memesters more and more

I want games to be good again, titles like dark messiah that brings at LEAST unique fun gameplay with the generic story and the tits and ass

I've always enjoyed watching video game shows on tv but those are almost entirely gone and trying to find actually decent let's players/let's plays of games that aren't piss easy is a fucking nightmare

Holy fuck it's just spam attack interspersed with QTEs. "I have to hit a button besides attack periodically, it's hard!"

I'm intentionally ignoring reading about Thief 4, since I'll have to buy it once it dips below $20. Call it wishful thinking or idiocy.

Similarly I'm hoping that BG&E2 lives up to its predecessor, but what sounds like their frat boy approach to game design has me worried.

Just finished DanganRonpa Trigger Happy Havoc for the Vita. Way too easy, bad pacing with far too much repetition, but I liked it far better than Phoenix Wright at least.

Sequel is supposed to improve on it greatly, so I guess I'll end up playing that too. Happy it got announced for the west. It's kind of surprising how much crazy Vita shit we're getting from Japan like Hatsune Miku, Oreshika, Akiba's Trip, Natural Doctrine, Persona 4 DAN and so on.

I will say this about Psychonauts. I have resorted to looking up a walkthrough twice so far. In both of these instances, the answer was actually something I'd already tried and moved on from because it was fiddly to get working. And in the first case, it didn't work every time even when I knew that was what I was supposed to be doing.

Just picked up the Armada era Transformers game, it's not half bad. Like Armored Core lite. Some of the unlockable extras are kind of lame though. Like pictures of the toys, and transformation instructions. I am not particularly motivated to unlock instructions on how to transform a toy that I will most likely never bother owning.

Majora's Mask.

Specifically, Goron Link's portion of the final dungeon.

WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU MAKE THIS THAT HARD

SERIOUSLY

THIS 'BOUNCE OFF OBJECTS WHILE GORON-SPINNING' MECHANIC IS SOMETHING YOU'RE INTRODUCING 99% OF THE WAY INTO THE GAME

AND YOUR FIRST OPPORTUNITY TO DO THIS REQUIRES YOU TO PERFECTLY MANAGE DOZENS OF RAMPS

AND IF YOU FUCK UP ON ONE, OR THE GAME SCREWS UP AND BOUNCES YOU IN THE EXACT OPPOSITE DIRECTION

YOU

START

ALL

OVER

Also Final Fantasy VI because I need something to play for a while that won't increase my changes of having an aneurysm.

Apparently it's also on Google Play and the Nokia Store. It's like playing DDR on a controller, with two up arrows, no down arrow and no dancing characters in the background. Still trying to 100% the songs on Easy.
Wish they'd put out an OST, so I can just listen to the songs.

>Ridge Racer 2 (PSP)
Never got an NA release, but PSP is region-free anyway.
Just playing Arcade mode, since I'm stuck on the harder extra Tours.

But those are just substitutes for when I can't visit the arcade to play...

>GuitarFreaks & drummania V8 (Arcade)
Twelve years and 21/20 AC iterations later, the gameplay still hasn't changed much. I'm missing some of my favorite oldies, though.
GF: full Dark, Reverse mode, 8.5x-9.0x speed, Position off, Combo off. I turn on (Super/Hyper) Random too, depending on the song.
dm: full Dark, 6.0x speed, Position off, Combo off. Still haven't learned to play without Auto-Bass, however.

>Wangan Midnight MAXIMUM TUNE 3DX+ (Arcade)
It's not Initial D, it's street racing, and the BGM's aren't eurobeat (they're trance, and by Yuzo Koshiro).
I've cleared all 100 stages/1st loop of this version with 2 of my 7 cards, 3 more to go (I'm keeping the two Subaru R2's at 64 HP).

I'm currently fighting my way through Arkham Knight on Game+ mode.

Crossed the 180% threshold not too long ago but the fighting mechanics are even more annoying w/o prompts so I doubt I'll finish it - they obviously were intended for a controller. Many of the keys you're expected to hit in the middle of a multi-person fight (where 10, 20, or more people are all crowding around you trying to attack you) are absolutely fucking retarded. Yeah, sure, I'm going to hold down control and 3 in the middle of mashing the keys I need to mash in order to not get beaten to death.

They try to cram them all into the first three-to-four rows of keys on the left side of the keyboard, instead of just using the entire thing, which is why the alt/control thing comes in, which necessitates too much movement of your hand to do it smoothly in a time-sensitive fight.

Apparently this game was even worse at launch, but I only got it a couple weeks ago... until I hit game+ mode it was fun. And even now the rest of it is still fun, just the no-hit challenges have become retarded due to the lack of counter prompts & adequate camera control (alternately they could stop the AI from traveling 50 feet in under 2 seconds, zooming in from off camera, then hitting you from 10 feet away even though you dived away before his attack animation started).

Even though I wanted to do things differently and make a character purely for combat with 0 social or exploration skills like hacking/lockpicking, my Brujah guy whilst socially retarded is an expert lockpicker/hacker because I can't seem to get away from those skills in any game that includes them.
It's like playing an evil character in a game with a shitty black and white morality system: it's technically possible, but more often than not you're just locking yourself out of certain content with nothing to replace it.
