The problem was that the DOD didn't want it, and went through impressive lengths to make it fail. It only melted when it dumped beta mags in FA, which is entirely unrealistic. H&K just has a history of being fucked by the US Gov't.

Of course they did. the American DOD are very patriotic by namesake. It's a bit harder for them to brainwash troops while you're arming them with foreign rifles even if they are sub-par and lead to troop deaths.

To be incredibly fair, they had, at the time, accepted the Beretta M9 as their standard service pistol. And it wasn't that it was foriegn, it's that it was H&K: Look back at the PTR-91 ban. There's a reason that H&K pretty much abandoned ever giving civilians any of their time and effort any more, with the exception of watered down versions of their military weapons.

To answer your question, the conventional wisdom is that most nuclear bunkers won't survive a direct hit from a nuke - however, it is probably a waste of nukes to start targeting random nuclear bunkers, instead of taking out significant strategic targets like airbases, docks, railways, utilities and government buildings.

Is it possible to have a hobby in defense technology? I feel like it's impossible to explore as an amateur. You can read and strategies, but never go further into operations or technical.

Guns have tactical importance, but they don't go any higher. A general doesn't fight thinking the caliber of his rifle, but the fire power of his tanks, the range of his missile system, the placement of his ships, the response rate of his mines and how easy to use his jets are!

I'm living in Switzerland right now, but will be returning back to the US during the Summer. I was wondering if there was any way I could bring back a SIG 550 series rifle (civilian semi-auto model) to the US as a "souvenir" of my time spent over here.

I've lived here for two years, so buying it won't be too much trouble, just get a permit to buy it and then an export permit to get it out of Switzerland. The problem is with getting it into the states. I know that the ATF doesn't permit commercial importing of the SWISS MADE sig rifles since they're foreign made and don't comply with 922r. But is there any way at all that I could legally import a Swiss Arms rifle? Fill out some forms and pay an extra tax or something?

922r is one of the dumbest regulations that you will ever come across - though there are ways that you might be able to adjust the part count with less important items which are from the US to get the part count down to the magic 10 imported parts. I would guess that a large portion of the parts from the 551 Classic are interchangeable with a Swiss made 550. If you take half from the US 551 and half from the Swiss 550 - you could get yourself two working and 922r compliant "550 1/2" guns.

Granted, you might be able to slip through if the inspector who signs off on the ATF form doesn't quite know what they are doing and just rubber stamps it on the way. I know when I was coming back from England, I brought back an FN which was legal - but they never bothered to verify that it was 922r compliant.

The final option which gets into that area of skirting the law is to break it down and have it shipped part by part to someone in the US. Once you get back to the States...put it back together again. It will likely be a violation of 922r - but no one will know unless you tell them.

The only way you can be reasonably sure is to call the ATF. At the very least you will have to ship it to an FFL and pay for shipping, and transfer fees. Be prepared to wait several months to a year (possibly longer) because the ATF has a huge backlog of pending approvals. Every NFA firearm, suppressor, and FFL application is handled by less than a dozen people.

What's the most effective and well balanced (range & damages) scoped anti-material rifle ?

I though it was the M107A1 first, then I discovered the XM109 and now that I know about the Anzio 20mm rifle I start feeling like the last one is the best.

I really love guns. I practice shooting. But I'm not an expert on this domain. That's why I'd love to have some better advices from people that really use these monsters.

Because the day I have the cash, I buy the fucking gun. No matter what's the price.
