Post your favorite type of sword.

Fictional swords don't count.

And don't be a lazy ass and pick the katana because you can't think of anything else. That sword is hugely overrated.

This thread is full of more idiots than the averagke 4chon /k/ thread.

I'm going to go through and dispell stupid ideas one at a time, but i'll start with just a few:
IT doesn't matter how big your sword is, or how pointy. You ARE NOT going to take a man in plate by just hitting him. For fucks sake, it was perfectly acceptable to use your arm to PARRY WITH.
You either have aweapon with a pommel designed for use in hurting people an duse that, half sword (this has the useful effect of SHORTENING the weapon, which is very important in keeping a thrust accurate), or most common of all, wrestling, throwing him (and yes, that shit would look a lot liek jui-jitsu) and stabbing him several times while he was down with sword, or dagger to the face/groin/armpit.

dopplesnlodiers were NOT usually armed with the zweihander. (proper term is bidenhander). This is a misconception, rolls of arm sfrom lanschnekt units show they generally used the halberd. Big swords were better off, and were, used by the banner guards, whereas the assault troops rushing forward to break the push of pike had halberds backed by side swords. And no, they didn't hack the heads off of pikes. The pike itself would just flex if hit, the users arms would also flex, and pikes were thick as fuck. If you could just cut polearms, roughly ALL of the techniques used with the polaxe would be suicidal.

that's because halberd and pike formations were terrifying even if you had a weapon especially made for lopping off pike heads

I'm sure it was okay in hand to hand combat too like any big hammer, because if it's not going to be big and tough it's not going to do much against a deflection from a sword or shield

>>
Sarah Palin 12/08/05(Sun)01:54 No. 14209

just so you know, real life katanas are the opposite of what they're bragged about as

functional katanas relied on size and weight not sharpness as much, oh and momentum too

unlike zweinhanders and so on, the blade's uni-directional, this allows for the hard steel front with a softer steel backbone for bend, allowing for it to withstand harder impacts from that one direction

it's a brute's weapon

>>
Sarah Palin 12/08/28(Tue)00:25 No. 14245

>>14230
Exactly. Rapiers were developed as a weapon for unarmoured civilians. This demanded a different approach than what was needed for war. Even just going up against someone with a shield and no armour would be a challenge with a rapier. Against proper armour you want something you can half-sword with.

>>
Sarah Palin 12/08/30(Thu)02:48 No. 14247

I'm willing to bet one of those metal garbage can lids could do some serious damage to a rapier's edge

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH-wAZvE07U&feature=related

someone pointed out in one of these kinds of videos that in a real battle you'd be going full out, and you'd swing that sword as hard as you can

this gives katanas the possibility of working against armour, as a way to put dents into it and crumple it, but chain mail would've been used under much of the plate armour and to my knowledge it's even more difficult to slash apart than plates of metal, although the impact would be harmful

however, the medieval hand and a half sword can be held nearer to the tip, as if transforming the sword into a temporary railroad spike, with the rest of the blade and your arms acting like the hammer

as you can see in the video, the armoured figures are perfectly fine taking hits on their hands and arms from the other sword

there's a video of someone taking a hit to the head with a sword, who's wearing a helmet, concussion could be an issue but he is unconcerned with shearing of the protective helmet

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy9OQoqW_MA&feature=related

here is another video, showing what they're talking about, the cut off bit about the dagger, basically just shows the "railroad spike" method again, as you can see by the shape of said dagger

the longsword can do with nearly equivalent success, everything the other swords can do, making it a generalist weapon and allowing for things that other swords/blades can't do, meaning even if you can't beat a weapon at the kind of fighting that it's strong in, you can do different things that are generally good counters

trying to lock blades and stabbing for instance, against katanas, since katanas rely on momentum, like an axe more than a razor

I just nerded out

>implying that a 1 pound saber profiled for cutting through flesh could go through plate armor
Katanas are a joke against an opponent with real armor. There is a reason why the japanese were so ineffective when they invaded China and Korea back in the day. Continental asian armor was much more advanced than japanese armor and it still at the level of late 13th century europe. A fully armored man at arms from the 15th century would wreck a man using a katana

The only realistic chance you would stand against 250lbs of armored killing machine when fully decked out would be a warhammer, mace or polearm. Good luck trying to stab through the unarmored areas during a dynamic situation which BTW are close covered with another form of lighter mail anyway.I have heard stories that it wasn't uncommon for knights in plate to win fights when outnumbered 1 to 100.Later Full plate wasn't as heavy or restrictive as people think either.

>>
Billy+Ocean 12/11/08(Thu)12:19 No. 14348

I like the longsword and Gladius. But what I really think is underrated is the falchion, it has what is essentially a clip point like a bowie knife which is a vicious penetrator. It is also has a hefty spine and geometry for chopping and hacking.

Riveted or butted mail? That makes a huge difference.
Honestly? A Katana would be my last choice for a sword, regardless of quality, you can only slash in one direction or thrust and half-sword and morten-schlag techniques are severely limited as a result of the small guard. I'd take a custom two handed sabre with an "S" curve, a longsword or falcata. Fighting with Sword and shield, sword-breaker or other dual-wielding techniques is wickedly effective if you've got the skill for it too.

Two-handed sabre. I just love that strong spine, that curvature which tips the weight forward so that i can strike my enemies and cut them like a razor and i love two-handed swords for the strengh and class they have.
Needless to say, i also like Katanas for the same exact reason. I don't like Dadaos or Daos though becouse they are just too heavy on their tips.

Sarah Palin 12/12/20(Thu)21:36 No. 14438

Kinda feeling the need for a curve to it for the slashing, but also a point. Must be short for stealth and concealment reason. Possibly that weapon the Alexander the Great used or maybe a Spartan sword. Sorry about the lack of names, haven't thought about this in a while.
