Post your favorite type of sword.

Fictional swords don't count.

And don't be a lazy ass and pick the katana because you can't think of anything else. That sword is hugely overrated.

Technically a katana is a sabre.

Zweihander
Große Messer
1800's heavy cavalry sabre
Nodachi(although it's still a sabre, not a sword).

I dont know, straight and broadswords just dont do it for me. Armour defeats the purpose of having a straight sword, and a große messer can thrust as good as any other sword but still has the curvature to cleave and the blade is balaced closer to the tip so the weight aids in power. Like a hammer.

DEFINITELY the longsword for me, now that I've read a little further into the combat capabilities of a longsword and the versatility it has, I like a lot, if the guy has armour, just bash them on the head with the pommel repeatedly, by holding the blade and swinging with it

bwuahahahaha, also, armour has joints and stuff, you can easily get into those joints and kill the man if you're skilled enough, as armour limits your mobility a bit, that's why knights had to do stuff like hand stands just to be apprentices

knights were fit yo

Actually, armor use gave us a type of straight sword. A rapier will go through chain links and chinks in armor. And I don't think anyone who fought in heavy armor against other people in heavy armor ever used curved swords.

And despite what you read on wikipedia is mostly true, KNIGHTS fought fully armoured. You do realize nodachi is essentially equivalent of european greatswords, right? It's definitely more cumbersome than german longsword and arming sword. Assuming it was even a real weapon and not just a training tool or translation error(if it's build the same way as katana it would be rather fragile).

that move where they use those dagger things and so on and that pony tail person twists and gets it in the gut in the end (well would have in a real fight) reminds me that if you use your body and twist it you can provide a leverage point there as well, putting off technique users if you're fast enough

>>
Sarah Palin 10/08/15(Sun)07:09 No. 10214

Technically, longswords too were two-handed swords. There were some longswords which were one handed, but that was definite minority.

What common folk(and people who make video games/pnp RPGs) means by "two-handed sword" is usually something halfway between Claymore(which had blade "just" 10cm longer than the longsword) and Zweihander(which had a blade of up to 150cm long). In the actual medieval times, the term "two-handed sword" didn't even exist*; instead there was a concept of a great sword, which usually meant normal sword scaled up.

And as for combat with such monsters, they probably handled more like polearms than actual swords.

the main thing is it's most useful style of useage is akin to that of a razor or exacto blade

anyways, I don't see a problem with using a real cane to break it (it's more solid)

and to beat the shit out of the person wielding a sword cane

So did the ottomans and valachians and they still killed each other with that thing, halberds, crossbows and pistols.

Wearing armor doesnt make you instantly inmune to weapons, otherwise no war would have ever been won.

>Wearing armor doesnt make you instantly inmune to weapons

A good armor makes you immune to significant majority of swords, especially draw-cutting swords which rely more on slashing than chopping motion. For example the german longsword failed to penetrate (relatively) common maile in most cases.

i have. while wearing chainmaille, plate spaulders, couter, pauldron and gorgets we decided to test and battle damage all pieces.
chops slashes and thrusts delt with a machete felt no more than light pushes and left very nice dents and scratches. then we brought out the excaleber replica. it was no more efective and bent after a few wacks(pos).then we got out the hatchet and ax. i could only take a few hits with them, it was like getting hit with a bat. i wound up with a brused sholder but it was worth it. thies were well placed hits not ment to inflick damage but still. it takes a real chink of steel to deter anyone with armor. in full dress i dont think i would step down from anyone with less than a claymore or pole ax
but like you said, penetration is not the only thing a big chunk of metal is good for. your right. even with armor large swords are bone breakers
pic related because you should own and use at least five of thies

>>
Sarah Palin 10/08/24(Tue)01:06 No. 10327

I too, have worn chain armour and taken hits in it (but not plate)

pointy knives are not comfortable... kitchen knives, armoured people's worst nightmare... also, knife sharpeners (the old school ones that look almost like some round thick sword) GOD THEY CAN PIERCE AND STAB IF YOU SHOVE THEM HARD

there is a point, at least with longswords and the like, at least european weapons style(fuck replicas) where it just fucking hurts like a bitch

and it's pretty damn easy to hack and slash with a wood axe through metal to the point where it's not the axe going through you, it's the fucking chain mail itself I think that's what was getting you, wasn't it?

/cringed at that one

we went easy on it since the chain armour wasn't made perfectly, but fairly closely to a large degree

the guy I know has a knack for it

is there a particularly useful chain mail type where there are in fact, larger loops with smaller loops in some form or another, that provides a slight rigidity, so that impact with blunt weapons is spread throughout the armour more, but impact with smaller weapons is still held back?

"greatswords" weren't designed to do anything. They were just bigger versions of already existing swords, made with the bigger = better mentality.

I was under the impression that those were pretty much used interchangeably with these.

Primary hand; Bearded one-handed axe, with a 6 inch steel spike at the opposite end of the handle, and a clover head opposite the axehead.
Secondary Hand; Hooded Katar/Shield Katar.
Armor; a combination of light place, scale and chainmaille.

Strategies?
Short swords/Daggers; Charge, use the shield to block the blade, and pick/bludgeon/axe to death.
Short sword and Shield; Block with shield, hook enemy shield with axe, punch enemy in face/neck/groin/ribs with katar blade.
Long sword; Block with shield, catch/parry with axe, bludgeon/pick/axe/facestab enemy into deathness.

The basic idea is, the sheild has a blade on it, so ti acts as a primarily defensive weapon, with offensive abilities, and the axe is bearded (so it has a hook on it) which lends it parrying abilities. if the enemy attacks, you have a whole laundry list of options, from using the shield to block and hooking their arm/leg/groin/head with the axe, to just blocking and then punching them in the face with the katar while they recover.

Oh, as a side note?
Katanas; block w/ shield, katarpunch in face. Or parry with axe, katarpunch in face. or block with shield, use 6 inch steel deathspike to icepick them in the face. Or block with shield, hook arm with axe, slice tendons with katar. I initially designed this set for theoretical use against mounted knights. On foot.

Boredom+Blacksmith=What have I done?

The katana yes the katana is overrated, but it's fairly versatile, powerful, and can be wielded in a large variety of ways. Also, it's not really a "pick up and slash" weapon, you need at least some training to wield it in any way that's effective against even a mildly skilled unarmed opponent.

The longsword is a close second, easy to wield one handed with a shield, but also very effective two handed. it loses points for being rather easy to wield to mild effect, though most people would never think of a morte strike or anything similar on their own. Fool's guard is fun on newbies, totally lives up to its name.
