Exoloding Cake Sarah Palin 12/05/03(Thu)00:03 No. 14053

Hey guys, how is it going? I am producing a music video, or at least attempting to, which involves exploding a chocolate cake roughly 15"*5". I would prefer the explosion to be slow enough to capture the effect of fucking up the delicious cake, but i also want it to be kind of excessive in force. essentially, i want to put on a good show while blowing up a cake. I dont have a pyro guy to do this for me, so i need YOU to help me out. What compound(s) should i use? How should i detonate it? what kind of safety precautions should i take? are there other options? Thanks for you time!(Sorry if this is the wrong board)

A pipe-bomb always does the trick. Recipes are readily available. Or you could use a couple ACME brand sticks of dynamite.

You're trying to assassinate someone with a cake. Aren't you?

Damnit, you uncovered my plot. But seriously, can anybody help? It will be a two piece cake, so i can easily put things in the middle if needed.

Get a pyro guy to do this for you. A bunch of flash powder should do the trick, but there's a fine line between a spectacle and a disaster.

I am no demolitions expert but I'd go with gun powder packed in a spherical wrapping that won't produce shrapnel when the powder is detonated, also I'd experiment with different grain sizes as too big will just burn instead of producing explosion and too small may cause bigger explosion than intended.

In any case, few tips if you really want to do it yourself; if you use gun powder experiment with bigger grains first (they burn slower, trust me on this), and do NOT use wrapping/casing that may produce shrapnel (thin plastic, tin foil or thick paper would be my choice), and I'd use remote detonation, I don't know what the laws regarding electric detonators are there but I'd use that method if at all possible.

I would LOVE to get a professional, but i just don't have the money to hire some one just to blow up a small cake a couple of times. Thanks for the grain size advice, i never thought of that. Would the moisture of the cake affect the flash powder/ gun powder?

You are getting into a fun but dangerous thing here. You should first look into non-explosive options first. Something like compressed air. Now for some reason I have a feeling you are going to dismiss that idea totally.

For using gunpowder go and fire a .22LR. That TINY little amount of powder makes that round go well beyond 200 yards. So just to give you an idea of what you are working with. start really really small I'm talking .5 to .75 grain of gun powder. Then move up as needed. 10 to 20 Cakes are cheep compared to a month in a intensive burn unit.

For a means of ignition go to your local hobby shop and look for the model rocket section, you could use the ignition source for those. It's basically a device to create an arc flash using a 9volt battery. That should be enough to set off gunpowder.

So far as set up I would bake my cake with a mold or something on the bottom that creates a small cavity on the bottom of the cake. Place your charge in that cavity then set the whole thing on some sort of nice flat steal plate. That way you shape the charge to fire up into the cake.

To hold the charge look at using wax, wax is easy to mold with a bowl of sand. If you have no clue what I'm talking about just google sand molds. You then insert your ignition device into the wax run the cord out of the back of the cake that way you cannot see it in the video. Get a safe distance away. Even get behind something and hit the button.

Hope this helps if you have any questions feel free to ask.

yeah, i have played with compressed air a little, and i feel that it would just push a plug of cake out. Not the look i am going for, i need chaotic forces to push the tasty cake to pieces. For amounts, would like 3 grams be to much? And as for ignition, i was thinking the same thing, rocket starters work for rockets, why not exploding cakes? That wax mold idea is FANTASTIC, thank you very much.

3 grams is around 50 grains of powder. Thats WAY too much to start at. A standard 7.62 NATO round has less than that. Google Grains to grams calculator. Trust me on working your way up. It will be fun, you will learn a lot taking the guess work out of other projects, and it will be safe.

You could rig up something that uses are pressure to make it explode. It would be safer and the cake won't get burnt.

FOR FUCKS SAKE DONT USE A PIPE BOMB!
If you live in murrica you can make your own black powder legaly if not just do so illegaly.
