Lets say the zompocalypse DOES accidentally formed... How about we keep in touch through subtle means--Like the shadowmarks from Skyrim's Thieves Guild? (pic related)

If not the same ones, we could use our own form of code to distinguish marks and places for us, the people we are likely to trust, and so bandits couldn't find our assets.

/zom/s thoughts?

I think we should find more like this and combine them into our own code based on whats out there for consitency

Might I suggest simplifying by replacing curves with lines? The people who devised those marks have obviously never tried to carve a circle, let alone a spiral, into the trunk of a tree.

The u.s army survival manual (f.m 29-76) a few symbols are shown in illustrations for ground to air communication in rescue situations..its possible those can be used.. I'll try to post a pic if I can find one

Threw this together in MS Paint, how do these work?

Any other important symbols I'm missing?

if you see some of the last three signs... you know there's something to raid!

I think this is a great topic, but a difficult one. Obviously there are a variety of marks out there from different sources, and it could become difficult to distinguish them. I propose we develop our very own set right here in /zom/, based on preexisting ones. We can then circulate them to our immediate survival groups for personal use, and perhaps one day even to help each other.

>>4116
I agree with this. One thing to consider is using something like chalk, crayons, or paint. This may be handy if you would need to hide the marks or modify them. Given that in a zombie apoc it is less likely would need to hide them, I can imagine just carrying a small can of spray paint or couple fat-tip sharpies for making marks.

I submit to /zom/ some OC of my own ideas for post-apoc road mapping. The marks were designed with a large marker or can of spray paint in mind, but there are no curves or swirls so they can be carved with relative ease. They cover only the most basic of survival needs. This eliminated needing to learn gobs of symbols you would rarely, if ever, see or use. Plus these seem pretty self explanatory even to the uninitiated.

Maybe could do without the "Safehouse" sigil. Its not really shelter unless its safe anyways...

What if raiders or other sadistic fucks use these sigils to set traps though? Like raiders could point to their own camp with a "safehouse" or "food/weapons cache" sigil to lure survivors into their camp, and some sadist/sick motherfucker might draw a sigil of a "food/weapons cache" on a place that's actually been overrun by zeds.

Also, we have to take into account time. Lets say you're in a safe house and get overrun by zombies. There's no time to make a sigil as you escape, so the next survivor that comes along sees the "safehouse" sigil and thinks that your place is safe when it's actually zed-infested.

Finally, what will you use to make the sigil visible? Carving it into wood is hardly visible without really close inspection, unless you're using something nice and wide to carve. Keeping a can of spraypaint on you would be handy, I would think.

>What if raiders or other sadistic fucks use these sigils to set traps though?

A): Always be cautious. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. B): If you're really paranoid, uniquely customize or encrypt the sigils for your unit (or just initial them, like the poster suggests). C): Make a name for yourself by killing all the raiders and bandits you come across. I dare you. Dont be a pussy bro. I'll be doing it. Keepin it alpha.

>Lets say you're in a safe house and get overrun by zombies. There's no time to make a sigil as you escape, so the next survivor that comes along sees the "safehouse" sigil and thinks that your place is safe when it's actually zed-infested.

A): How hard is it to make a big 'X' on your way out?(assuming you already made the sigil to mark your shelter) It also depends on where the sigil is. Sure you may not have been able to 'X' out the one on the front door, but what about all the ones on the trail leading up to it? After you escape you may end up doubling back through there, at which time it would be polite to cross them out for future travelers. B): Just because a sign says an area is safe doesn't mean you (or the next guy) can't do a security sweep of it. This is some real shit in the zombie wasteland with niggas eatin each other. Take nothing for granted and don't be lazy.

>Finally, what will you use to make the sigil visible?

I want something convenient, like chalk or a fat-tipped sharpie. They're quick, easy to use, and can be carried in your pocket (put the chalk in a cigar tube). Spray paint is kinda bulky, even those half cans, although you gain the benefit of highly visible brightly colored paint. You could just use some caution tape or ribbon tied to a nearby tree, fence, etc to help it stand out.

My vote is for this, pretty easy to remember
but always be cautious to not get into bandits traps

fair enough. Thanks for elucidating.

I think if there are going to be any signs they should be somewhat camouflaged in an urban/rural setting

If im looking to take some things that aren't mine and do some badness id definitely be following the arrows to the nearest group of frightened survivors.

It'll be awhile untill I can provide an example
