Should I go to Ukraine and volunteer for an NGO? I'm not really doing anything else right now, and it seems like it could be fun. They provide housing. My best friend is there in Lviv now, and he says the food is cheap and the girls are beautiful. Almost no girls are fat, unlike in the US.

there's literally a neo-nazi party present in its government called svoboda. the reason putin gives for invading is to get rid of this party and atone for the crimes its committed particularly in the past 8 years. the theory that he's just randomly trying to rebuild the soviet union is baseless and I find it hilarious that its the standard position being pushed by western media.

A Ukrainian refugee and volunteer, struggling to find the words to express his emotions, just said it's "magic" that I'm trying to help and learn the language and appreciate the culture, so that pretty much made my day. And then another volunteer, a veteran who's not trying to learn the language, tried to lecture him about how it's "counterproductive" that he has such a strong desire to kill all Russian soldiers, comparing it to the religious animosity he encountered in the Middle East. Later, he asked me what I thought about it and I said I didn't come to Ukraine to tell the Ukrainians how they should feel about the conflict. It's their fight, not mine. I'm just helping. I find such American lack of humility deeply disturbing.

i use these institutional toilet paper rolls.
been stealing them from the same place as needed for 7 years.
they're wide and don't fit on the wall dispenser.
i need to put my fingers in the center, pull on the end and unspool a piece to use.
the roll spins in a satisfying way when i do this.
i've learned how to pull, tear, and gather up the right length each time with few motions of my free hand.
at first, as each piece of paper is torn from the roll, it's hard to see any difference in it's diameter.
the more i use, the more quickly the paper roll shrinks
it always lasts longer than i expect

This is an oil painting found in a dumpster.
It's small, about 9x6in.
It was painted sometime in the 1920's.
The frame is original and has some writing on the back but no title and is unsigned.
It's hard to see, but the scene is of a sailboat on a moonlit sea.
It's almost as dark in real life as it appears.
The painting is not good, or valuable, but there's something about the way the clouds and light on the wavetops that convey a certain mood.

When i was 20, i had a friend who would come over and he would take cocaine and he would start picking up anything he could find to use to cover the windows. He did this every time. He was a truck driver, and one of the dumbest people i ever knew, but in a harmless way. Despite his mental defecit he would get laid constantly, apparently he was very good looking. Girls i knew called him a male slut. I went on an overnight ride along with him in the cab of a semi, delivering pallets of gorton's fish sticks and breaded filets from the factory. On the way he broke into one of the cases and stole a few boxes of fish. We microwaved them later. Some of you reading this might be expecting some kind of confession at this point, but it's not that kind of story.

I take a bolt downtown. At a cafe, I meet an almost thirty year old Ukrainian data scientist. We hug. She says her shirt is soft and I feel it. It says something patriotic about Ukraine. She doesn't seem to be wearing a bra. She drinks a coffee and I eat an ice cream bar. We sit outside and talk for a while. She tells me about her history. She was born in Ukraine and studied in the United Kingdom, with a study abroad in the US. She works for an American tech company and gets paid in dollars. She doesn't like that she sometimes has to stay up late for meetings with American colleagues. They're working on a mental health chat bot. She is very grateful that I am volunteering. We walk and she shows me around. We go to the post office and she helps me buy postcards and stamps. She has to go to work, so we say goodbye and hug. It's quite a good hug, and we touch hands as we part ways.

Best date ever!

here's a true story

when i was 17, i was assistant manager of a domino's pizza outside boston.
we had a delivery driver named ed.
ed lived in his car, which was strewn with bondage porn magazines, and carried around a copy of the satanic bible.
we called ed baby huey, like in the comic book, because he was a big, pear shaped guy with a small head.
ed had a section 8 discharge from the navy, for deliberately jumping off the side of a ship.
ed delivered pizza for us for a few months, then stopped showing up to work.
no one thought anything of it, until about a week later, when two mass state police detectives came in and asked to see ed's work papers "investigating him in connection to the disappearance of two people"

there was a man ed knew, who, it seems, had the life ed wanted.
a modest house, a steady income, a social life.
so, ed murdered him by strangling, buried the body in the woods, and moved into the man's house.
of course, the man's friends were suspicious, not believing he'd gone away and left ed with the run of his home.
one friend was particularly persistent in questioning ed.
ed murdered the friend by strangling, and buried the body in the woods.

shortly after this, with people around ed going on sudden vacations, the police were called, and ed went on the run.

cue state police coming to domino's looking for ed

now the cops are after ed, and he's on the run.
he needs money, so he calls up a domino's the next town over and orders a delivery, planning on robbing the driver.
when the driver shows up, ed is lying in wait outside the house. he stabs the driver with a screwdriver, and tries to strangle him with a shoelace.
but, the shoelace bseaks, and ed, covered in blood, panics and flees.
the next morning, ed is arrested in a laundromat, in his underwear with his blood soaked clothes still in a washing machine, after other concerned customers at the laundry phone police about a large man with a small head, taking off his bloody clothes in public.
