"France would now be governed from Berlin"
Unless Germany ignored the lesson otherwise successful Napoleon taught the world, and invaded Russia to its peril. Which it did, and also did.
The US waits til most of Europe was crushed, England is anywhere from a day to a week of munitions left, and it's essentially Russia burning up Hitlers army, to roll in when it's all but over, parade on through the ruins, and spend the next century claiming to have won the war nearly single-handedly.
Let's see, shall we, what the US's track record of military excellence looks like post WWII, without the rest of the world to do the lions share of the fighting for them. Korean War, good, created North Korea, Cambodia, where Kissinger launched airstrikes on tens of thousands of civilians in an attempt to engage them in the a conflict they wanted no part of, Vietnam, the wondrous success that followed, Panama, when the US foresaw the danger of being invaded and turned communist by a tiny central american impovershed nation of a few thousand peasant soldiers, Chile, killed democracy and installed a brutal genocidal dictator, Gulf War, whew, sure solved that saddam problem once & for all, Afghanistan, hey, let's get everybody on board for this one... Afghan wha... Iraq! Leaving more French soldiers than Americans to fight the actual enemy in Afghanistan, the US launches another successful war against Saddam, then non-existant WMDs, then resistance of any kind to their occupation, with no clear enemies, no clear objectives, no exit strategy, then goes bankrupt.
Bang-up job, ol chaps. I tip my 1991 Chianti Classico to the most ambitious overreaching failed empires.
