can you help me identify a painting from van gogh
I saw it in the Rijksmuseum but can't recall the name.
It showed a foredt from a somewhat high angle and had a lot of undergrowth. red and orange were really present for a forest picture. and it was one of his less realistic paintings

Sophisticated Gentleman 16/06/28(Tue)21:29 No. 3181

Van Gogh did several paintings that match your description.

This page includes images of a few of them:

The rijksmuseum lists one in its collection here, but no picture:

The webMuseum has some other images, less realistic but with plenty of orange.

Hope this helps

Pic related ranks high on my list

Everything he made is treasure

This has an eerie, cult like vibe to it. All the attention to the viewer is uncomfortable. The composition is most irregular and the large area devoted to the mossy/swampy color grass combined with the viewers distance from the scene makes me feel unwelcome. There's a lot to unpack but in general everything feels very intentional and it emanates mood and unease. It's captivating in that sense and definitely a painting worth looking into for more than a just a glance.

Didn't this guy illustrate a children's book? Looks really psychedelic. I wonder if there is a link between psychosis and making psychedelic art.

Mogwai - Take Me Somewhere Nice

This is an engraving for printing press in like the 1500s right? If so then this is sick. Great mastery of the medium.

I'm very fond of this 3 tablet format (didn't know it's called a triptych lol) It feels very sublime and it's theistic origin underlines that notion

Goya is definitely one of my favorites too. From the dark series I really like The Dog and Saturn Devouring his Son. His etches really are something else too. The social commentary in their titles really has a certain sarcastic humor to them while also showing us vile subjects taken straight from either the his local society or his personal experience of war. A really good one is the front piece of his Disasters of War series called "Sad forebodings of what is to happen". His expression of surrender and approaching darkness is nothing short of amazing.

I have such a hard on for sublime art like this. You might like "The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum" and "The Great Day of His Wrath" both by John Martin. Oh and also check out William Turner if you haven't already.

Sophisticated Gentleman 19/10/18(Fri)01:38 No. 3489

I'll just put a token in here. To maintain people's continuous fires of appreciation for Van Gogh burning. I like most of the paintings he's done. Really like that art style. I get too defensive when I see it, though, and I want to just not try anything in painting because that's just a field I would be in where I would not accomplish what he has. So it's a bittersweet experience of all bittersweet experiences seeing his paintings. I can't do it every day. lol It would be uncaring of myself and I need to have regularly predictable and ease-centered environments in terms of discomfort.

Recently learned of Lucian Freud, a contemporary of Francis Bacon's.

His art is so, emphatic of mortality and an almost repulsive-like quality of the human body, harsh exaggeration of bone structure, and often the enlargement of eyes and face. This one with wrinkles.. It seems like a dark place to be for me to feel so connected to stuff like this or some of Francis Bacon's art. Much of what else is posted in this thread is life affirming, or at the very least not so existentially bleak.
