A quick guide to cover the basics should you be unsure and in need of guidance.
Step 1 - Get your birthday suit ready.
Exactly what it implies, shit, shower, shave, teeth, hair, nails, whatever personal grooming you need to do you get it done before you put on the suit. Nobody wants to see moisturiser, toothpaste and dandruff on your clothes so put them on, let them set and wash any grease off your hands before you start touching cloth.
Step 2 - Socks and underwear.
Order doesn't matter but the key thing here is to put your socks on before you put your trousers and tie on.
Step 3 - Shirt
Put your shirt on, button it up two from the top. Leave the tie for now.
Step 4 - Trousers
Open the flies all the way and put your legs in the trousers, pull it up both legs at the same time, wrap the waist around your clothes and zip/button it up. The trick here is to wrap your trousers round the shirt, not only does it prevent the classic uneven stuffing that blemishes so many waist lines but it also gives a comfortable, well fitting, length for the shirt as it hangs from your shoulders in the natural position when you do secure it to your waist line. Now put your belt on.
Step 5 - Shoes
Sit down on a chair, put them on. Do NOT go down on your knees!
Step 6 - Tie
Do those top two buttons up, pick your knot and fold the collar over. Start folding in the rear centre and come round to the front otherwise you'll get ridge lines from the cloth accumulating towards the back.
Step 7 - Finishing touches
If you need to adorn yourself with any jewellery now is the time to put it on. Watch, cuff links, tie pin, any more than that can be considered excess.
Step 8 - Jacket
There are many ways techniques for putting on a jacket but the key thing to remember is to keep the jacket orientated the correct way up the entire time. Do not spin it round your body or flip it over your head and remember to keep it buttoned up. If you're in a situation where it's considered acceptable to wear it unbuttoned remove it entirely. It is not a smokers jacket, do not treat it as such.
