Additional part of this imagined history:
By 2050 most of the world is severely suffering from global warming however the west has closed its borders to all climate refugees and manages to keep persuading it's people that global warming is a myth. This backward ideology prevents them from developing any answers to it. China manages to develop a method of manipulating the weather systems by manipulating carbon dioxide (or holes in the ozone layer - i'm not sure how) and actually restoring most of the temperate conditions on earth and eventually redirecting humid air across the sahara making it an enormous and incredibly fertile and productive agricultural area. Also part of how they eventually beat the west as these weather systems provide them with (wind) energy and food along with economic support from non-alligned countries.

Also because of these terraforming abilities Africa and the Middle-east become more prosporous. Europe is regarded as more a less a wasteland but through frequent slaving missions alot of Europeans are brought to the new Umma where eventually they become, much like mamluks in previous islamic empires, highly regarded and even more appreciated than alot of the Free-born arabs. As slaves they can be used for human experimentation and eventually they are developed into highly intelligent and efficient creatures regarded as mysterious and mystical by normal people.

At some point China will set it's eye on the middle east and specifically saudi arabia as oil resources are dwindling globally and no-one has yet found an alternative. I suppose this might happen sometime between 2030 and 2050. Ongoing 'arab spring' revolts are redrawing the allegiances of the region and the USA and Europe are losing influence and china gaining as it supports most of the 'popular' rebellions. In it's desperation the USA sends an army to take cairo, the sinai and move into Arabia supported by Israeli airpower, missiles etc. A Previous global pact had succesfully banned and destroyed all mobile nuclear weapons however the USA and China start to produce more. When the American troops touch down in Mecca shit hits the fan- China honours a pact with several muslim countries and starts a full scale war with The United States. The Federal European Union supports the usa of course and sends troops and supplies. Both China and the West start recolonising africa for its resources and China also hits out at Australia. This is where most of the main ground fighting is done. India stays neutral for as long as possible as does Russia. South America tacitly supports the west at first until a revolution in Brazil which then leads the rest of the continent against the USA. A new pact is formed between the Brazillian, Russian, South African and Indian governments, so that they may remain neutral however this does not succeed as the USA starts to reclaim Mexican territory. An uneasy pact is made between the BRISA group and the Chinese alliance (china, Indonesia, South-east asia and most central asian countries). THe USA and Europe stand pretty much alone except for Japan and Australia which are the frontlines of battle after most of Africa is lost along with the middle east. China proves superior because it develops different energy sources while the Usa & EU are stuck in conservative and backward ideological fundamentalism - both develop into fascist societies. Finally to end the war, the new UN, the Global Council, approves strategic nuclear strikes across north America and also at the edges of Europe. America is crippled quickly but, having become a continental fortress, Europe fights on and returns nuclear war on Russia until it is finally sieged and forced to sign a truce with the new powers.
In the aftermath the federal systems of the west collapse into small nativist and totalitarian states. The Brisa group collapses and it takes about 50 years to reestablish anything that can rival the now proven chinese hegemony. Eventually South Africa, Australia, India and Japan form a new union based on cultural similarities. The Middle-East and South America develop a union based on technology. China and Russia become almost unified along with central and south-east asia. Europe and North America are seen as slave colonies while Africa, after a while of in-fighting and redrawing the borders, eventually results in the north and western continent joining the middle east with east and most of black africa joining South africa and it's union with Japan, India, Australia.

2) acquisition of energy resources.

This is my scenario for WWIII, based on the acquisition of energy resources, which I consider to be the most likely possibility of WWIII:

I believe there will definitely be large scale conflict in the future. I think that this will really start to develop somewhere between 2020-2040. Basically, countries like the USA will fail to achieve energy independence, and the falling number of oil exporting countries will be forced to charge higher prices for their oil. Importing countries will kick up a fuss about it, and it will eventually end with war. I don't think there will be large alliances, but rather a lot of local conflicts. Here are some ideas:

USA vs Mexico. (Oil) Justification: Illegal immigrants or the drug war.
Canada will be a semi-vassal of the USA. (Oil)

Japan, Australia and the USA may team up against China. The trigger will be China's inability to look after it's huge population. Due to the high male population of China, there will be millions of men unable to obtain a family, and therefore willing to fight and die in the army.

Australia will wield a surprising amount of influence in the war. China will be interested in easy resources, such as those found in Australia (we have a shitload of uranium and coal, we export like 4 times more than we use). Australia will appease Japan and the USA with guaranteed energy exports (Japan will have little choice in the matter), in return for protection. Above all, Australia will just desire to keep conflict off of their land. The Western allies will probably occupy the northern islands (Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Phillipines) to function as a buffer, and also because they are rich in resources (Japan did the same thing in WWII).

As for India... They might strike west into the Middle East, or team up with China. They are already in the shit as it stands right now... Imagine China but without the one child policy.

Russia will probably remain neutral, and export to whoever pays the highest price. They have a solid country which nobody is really in a position to invade, and they are largely self-sufficient.

The Middle East will probably be the enemy of everyone... They are in a bad strategic position, and have lucrative resources. Indeed, we might see 2 foreign countries fighting for control, kinda like the Vietnam War. Huge wars will be fought for control of the Suez Canal.

Many places will probably continue on as normal without seeing any conflict (Russia and Scandinavia come to mind).

Anyway, that's my opinion of how things might turn out. I don't pretend to actually know what might happen, this is just my attempt to predict the future. Hopefully the whole 'fusion power' thing actually works out, eh? (fat chance lol)

First, you need people to rise up, but be organized about it. But historically, by the time "the people" have decided on their own, without direction, to take collective action, it is rarely organized, and often takes the form of riots.

The Communist revolutions that we've seen, on the other hand, have not come from the people coming together to oust the exploiters, but of some group channeling discontent into action in order to become the new exploiters.

Even if we did see an actual uprising of the people, there's the problem of keeping a new exploiting class from forming during the period of instability. It only takes one person with both greed and charisma to destroy the efforts of thousands of people towards true unilateral social equality.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's impossible, but it is VERY far from the inevitable outcome predicted by Marx. Long story short, if you can't understand why Communism has never worked in real life, read Animal Farm.

Particularly i'm interested in leftist views of why communist efforts have so far been completely catastrophic. I don't really have any idea but I realise that the soviet union, maoist china or most other places which had successful revolutions installed systems that look nothing like actual what was proposed in actual communist theories.

Pls don't fill up this thread with arguing about whether or not the SU was 'true communism' - it was a catastrophe for humanity regardless of theory. Pls keep to the question, ok?

you are also what's called a north american/european exceptionalist

many of the democratic behaviours one espouses as existing only in "the west" have been in practice since sumeria and even before that in the middle east

furthermore, in as far as a "nation" decides to be democratic, it does so through a rigorous opposition to the government (because that's the powers that be, who like their power to remain at a level commonly known as "lots")

and furthermore, a lack of introspection combined with an investigation of the internal situation of other societies leads people to totally miss these important things - giving the illusion that we are somehow by default, more free than middle easterners or chinese

while a rigorous investigation will turn up that we are more free than they are, the reason is predominantly that in our case, civil dissidents made lots of progress in scaring the government from it's excesses

today, many of the displays are far more symbolic, peaceful protests and so on, and way less in the form of angry mobs with sticks taking over territory like it was some kind of legit army (sharpened sticks being spears) and that's important

so the dissidents of one nation, or group inspire the dissidents of another, and then cruelty to people you know gets you angry at the regime in power, and then you go out and display this, and any injury to you inspires others, etc etc etc
