Religion destroyed religion in the US and Europe. There were 40 years of active backlash to the ascendancy of right wing Christianity. Whole generations for whom not only was church uncool, it was actively cool to reject it. The standard bearers for religion in the US and Europe were all assholes. Of course it was going to collapse.
