Discuss the upcoming block, strategies, cards, formats, whatever else you like. Just as long as it involves MTG.

Personally I want to start a cube with my friends that includes some vintage cards. Any thoughts or advice? I heard the shit's expensive.

Nobody666 19/08/03(Sat)21:03 No. 131544

MtG can get very expensive to play very quickly. Packs start at about $4, Planeswalker decks are $15~20, and giant card boxes (or Commander decks) run about $50, unless you get the Basic Lands Starter Box, that's still about $20. What you get in each pack or box is up to pure chance though, just like any other collectible card game.

Prices vary on individual cards and the strategy you want to aim for, with Rare and Mythic Rare usually being the two most expensive on average.

If you want to take a test drive of Magic without paying oodles of money to make a decent deck, I'd strongly recommend checking out Magic the Gathering: Arena (Free to Play) on PC. Even without paying Wizards of the Coast the big bucks, you can get familiar with most of the cards that are floating around in today's format. It sadly does not feature any of the old classic cards though. Only cards and reprints that have been seen in packs from the last few years.

Disclaimer: A new banlist is coming for the fall, so before you invest Wildcards into a specific strategy, check to make sure the cards will be legal going forward.

You shouldn't really buy the prebuilt box sets.
You're better off buying large boxes of booster packs, imo.

I mean, you are more likely to get better cards than the commander decks and the like. You basically know what you're re getting in those.

The large boxes do offer the best value for the money overall, but you pretty much have to order them from online, as you won't find them in stores... Unless you know a guy at a local card shop that will let you buy the whole box of booster packs.

On average, large booster set boxes tend to be most of $100, but varies depending on the set and whether or not you can find it on sale somewhere.

Results are still not guaranteed, and if you really want to build a specific deck strategy... Rather than going through hundreds of packs or more and praying for good luck, you're in most cases better off hitting up the aftermarket and searching for specific cards.

Most deck builds average $20~100 if you go for individual cards, then add whatever basic or dual lands you need to finish, but prices can vary widely depending on popularity and what you want to play. A Tier 1 or Eldrazi deck will probably be quite a fair bit more expensive than a $20 "budget build" deck strategy.

And if a card is going down in value, that means you should probably check to see if the card is getting banned soon (Or was recently added to the list).

Dominaria United (DMU)

Land destruction is discouraged from current magic but I personally think the mechanic should return. Saying that, I think Sundering Titan is fine.
